Clipping designs

Okay but… How on earth do you get clean lines around the long hair? I was thinking about finding compatible guards for my Andis and clipping her booty short, THEN clipping with the 10s and making the pattern, but I want to do a real intricate one that won’t show grey on grey.

You might have to use her black skin as the contrast if you want intricate and recognizable.

I’ve used dry erase markers to rough draw my design on the long hair, and I’ve used scissors to cut the design line around a cardboard template so I can see where the edges are when using the clippers. I have to kind of dot the line when going across the hair so the marker doesn’t just push it out of the way.

Can someone explain how they use the stencils successfully?

Do you mark the coat or clip thru the stencil, etc?

How do you make the thin clipper lines to use the skin color?

The stencils from Stencil Bum have some adhesive on the back, so you stick it to the horse then clip through. Theoretically they are re-usable, but after a few years I find the adhesive needs a little help, so I typically use a glue stick to keep it on the horse.

Sometimes you accidentally clip the stencil, but you can adjust as needed.

It’s helpful to have smaller/nimbler clippers than the big honkin’ body clippers for the thinner lines. I have small pet/human clippers that I usually bring with me when I do stencils, but otherwise can usually do ok with my Andis ACG 2-speed.

Here are a few I’ve done over the years. I think of an image I’d like to clip, look at some free clip art online and make a template with either thin cardboard or plastic craft sheets. Obviously my designs are quite simple. I use a cheap pair of Andis muzzle/stable clippers and take my time. It’s pretty fun!

Yeah she is much adorbs, I loff her. She channels the mare hate too, which is hysterical given her cute factor and small stature. She whoops the behind of my rising 3 yo IDSH on the regular.

She’s an IDSH with Tea in her show name. Hence the Irish or tea images.
