Clipping designs

Okay so the last post on this was almost 13 years ago, AND all the links have expired.

Do you clip designs? If so, how? I’m going to be clipping my wooly pony, and I’ve done patterns before where I’ve left hair behind for the design but I’d rather have a cleaner look since she’s so hairy… Would you recommend the regular clipping job and then taking the design to the skin/shorter?

Following because I want to clip a checkerboard on my gray mare and I need to know if its a stupid idea…

I have never clipped a design, but I’m fascinated by those who can… like this guy, Rob the Original.

I watched his and want to do the scrolly floral design, and in watching he clips the pattern shorter. Soooo… off to Amazon, ordered a 40 blade for my clippers to go with the extra 10s I need since Andis said 5 of the 8 I sent for sharpening were “damaged” and they can’t sharpen them.

Of course, watching this again and realizing that unlike leaving the design in long hair that can be clipped off, she would have a naked booty if I needed to “start over”… Maybe I should start on a burrito instead

I keep meaning to brush a checkerboard on my lease’s tush.

I want to see that sooo bad, Jenners!!

Although depending on what you clip in, will the Burritos ever forgive you?

My mare’s barn name is Tesla, so I printed out a large Tesla logo, laminated and cut it out as a guide. I leave the T as the unclipped part because if I screw it up I can just shave it off. Nothing fancy but people love it.

I just have to come up with a design that would be appropriate - I think scrolly floral design would get me some grumpy burrito faces.

I did a four leaf clover (he was IDSH) and an R inside what was supposed to be a Superman design… But with clipping DOWN into the hair, I can’t just clip it off if I mess up hahaha.

Haahaha yasss

I am super impressed with all of you free-handing your designs. I buy stencils from Stencil Bum in the UK and just re-use those few every year.

I thought I’d share what my “canvas” looked like last night, so you can see that leaving longer hair just won’t work because she’s such a yak… Also filthy but she’s a grey pony mare, so just look past that. Below that is her clipped last spring, she’s actually a cute pony under all that filth and fur.

What I do with winter coat clipping designs is leave the design long, then use a length guard/comb on my clippers and clip the long hair over the design. I have a 1/8" guard/comb and it leaves enough length to have a contrasting hair colour, while still being short enough to have nice clean edges on the design itself.

Plus if I royally eff it up I can clip it down to the same length as the rest of the clipped hair.
