I have a horse with Cushings. He takes forever to shed his winter coat which is usually fine since spring is normally 50s/60s degree days. The year, nature is being a schizophrenic *itch and throwing 90 degree days at us. He’s been tolerating it, but I’m sure he’d feel better with less of a coat to deal with. I have the Andis clippers with the T-84 blade. I know it’s very late in the season to be clipping, so I just want to know if that blade will leave the hair long enough that I don’t damage his summer coat.
You can clip any time they need it
The “damage the summer coat” thing is mostly a myth. Clip away.
I’m clipping my cushings pony tomorrow. It’s never too late.
Good to know…thanks!
I clipped mine today (in NJ)…good timing too! I had done a bib clip to ride, and you almost can’t see the difference between that line and what I clipped off today. He is happier…as I also found a tick buried under all the hair (and we use equispot). I should have done it sooner!
Good point about the ticks. I do worry about one hiding under all that hair. I use Equispot too. Love that stuff.
Assuming that blade length leaves a healthy length, don’t worry about what it’s doing to the Summer coat.
