Closet hunt to central Wisconsin

Hello,

I used to cap with Rombout and moved to Wisconsin last year. I am looking to hunt here on occasion. I looked at the mfha and found that Cornwall Hounds seem closet (?) to Pittsville Wisconsin. I emailed the contact information listed on their website but did not get an answer. Does anyone know a contact info for Cornwall?

If anyone knows of another hunt close to central wisconsin, please advise. I also see one in Minnesota

I know there is an active hunt in Minnesota, Long Lake Hounds.
They hunt just west of Minneapolis mostly. My neighbor mentioned
she would be hauling this weekend to one of their meets.

I was told by a local bear hunter that it would not be possible for
a hunt to function in Wisconsin. According to my informant, there
is a law in Wisconsin that only a maximum of six dogs may be
used for hunting at any given time. I have not asked the State DNR
if this is true but would love to know. I have some land and have
farm neighbors with considerably more who would love to watch
a hunt over our land if it were legal. We do have both cayote and
fox here; I’ve heard the former and have seen the latter. However, if pack size is limited to six dogs, its not much of a foxhunt.

Could you please put in in touch with this neighbor? My name is Dionne …my email is babalinany@hotmail.com

And hope it doesn’t rain between now and then. We have precious few meets left for the season, and the soil is currently soaked. Often the fields can stay on trails, but the whips just cannot manage when their horses sink six inches in mud.

There are alleged to be some drag hunts in WI. Please keep this thread alive and post new info as it comes up. There are a few of us in the Madison area that are working toward having a hunt! There are also “foxhunting” clubs around, but they are on foot and use a different sort of hound.

Also, depending on where you live, the Ill hunts, or maybe even Iowa, may be closer to you than Minnesota.

Robin, you struck my curiosity so I searched the Wisconsin DNR Game Regulations Pamphlets for reg on dogs and hunting. (Red and Grey Fox are “Furbearing Animals”)

From http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/wildlife/regs/SGHunt09.pdf

Use of dogs for hunting
Dogs are legal to use for hunting Small Game Mammals, Game Birds*, Furbearing Animals, Migratory Game Birds, and Unprotected Species. Dogs must be leashed at all times on Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs) unless engaged in legal hunting activity.

No number is specified anywhere in the small game pamphlet.

FYI Wisconsin Dog Training and Trialing Regulations http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/wildlife/captive/dog_train_trial.pdf

From Wisconsin Hound Dog Training Enclosure Regulations http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/wildlife/captive/hound.pdf

  1. Number of dogs. No person may place or allow the placement of more than 3 dogs into any coyote or fox hound dog training enclosure for each coyote or fox that is present in the enclosure.

This would only apply to training, not to actual hunting.

From what I read the 6 dogs rule only applies to bear hunting, not to fox hunting. I find that here in the Bear Regulations pamphlet http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/wildlife/regs/09BearRegs.pdf

Dog Training and Use
It is illegal to:
Hunt, train dogs, or pursue bear with more than 6 dogs in a single pack, regardless of the number of bear hunters or the dog’s ownership.
Note: Dogs that fall out of the chase may be replaced, but no more than 6 dogs may be used to pursue bear regardless of the number of bear hunters and regardless of the dog ownership.

Aha, thank you Renae for checking the regulations in Wisconsin.
My informant is indeed a bear hunter and the named “six pack
rule” clearly applies only to her quarry. Our farm is about an
hour from Stillwater; do you think there might be some folks
interested in hunting over the land here. I will talk things up
with my farm neighbors if there are interested parties. The
local farm community would likely love to watch such a show
as a hunt in action. I have neighbors who hunt their hounds
(night hunters) so the challenge would be to get them comfortable
with all the mounted field.
