Alright guys, have a Registered 2.5 year old Clydesdale mare which i think is pretty small for her age. Currently she is 14.3 hands. Dad was 16.1, mom was 17. Is she just going to be small? Or a late bloomer? She was malnourished for the past 4 months, but when she was with her breeder she was well cared for. The breeder also said she was born small. Am I going to have a mini clyde on my hands??
Was she the mare’s first foal? The first ones tend to be smaller.
And yes, I know drafts take a lot of time to grow but i would be shocked if she gets over 15.1 at this point. Probably why the breeder sold her! If she is the horse in your profile pic, she is cute as hell. :love-struck:
She WAS her first foal!! And yes thats her! Everyone that sees her thinks shes still a yearling, the dentist thought she was too based on her teeth?? But I have ALL her baby pics and everything from the breeder. They went through a divorce and re homed her to a guy that couldn’t afford to feed her, So she was surrendered to my rescue. I didnt pay for her, but with Chiro care,vet care and massages I have close to 1500 in her

Do you need her to be larger?
Agree with @Suspiria , poor nutrition may have contributed or she could just be genetically small for the breed.
If she ends up 15ish hands, she still has enough bone to be a solid mount (or Driver) for you.

What are your plans for her?
Drafts do take longer to mature. That said if you are worried about rehoming her I bet there are lots of people that would love a small draft as a riding horse. It’s not my thing 
but there are people looking for this kind of horse.

I dont need her to be a certain size, Just thought it was odd! There are alot of people that have offered me money for her! But she has other issues… Knocking hocks, Swollen hocks, Roached back…tucked pelvis… She may or may not be ride-able, I wont know until she has lots of body work and massages.
Oh that’s too bad. I have seen photos of extreme roach back in drafts, it’s congenital and can be debilitating. Do you know if the original breeders produced quality horses?

They did produce quality horses…she was not born that way, so im not sure what happened!

You may find some of her issues disappear once she is in good flesh. While I haven’t owned a draft breed I did have a draft cross I bred and her foals grew until they were 5+.
If she were mine I would prefer her on the smaller scale of height as long as she was healthy, but she may surprise you in the next few years.
