“Dark Side of Horse Racing”
Yeah right. The difference from when a TC is on the line and when one isn’t is about 80,000 people. Not to mention this isn’t news, there would have been plenty of time to tell them that before they shipped in.
I find it hard to believe that whatever group (NYRA? ) could bar the horse from racing would actually do that for a multitude of reasons. First, to the best of my knowledge, there is no indication that IHA was dosed before the Derby or the Preakness; second, it would be a bad business decision given the crowd he will draw and the wagering and all that stuff.
I read somewhere, though don’t remember the source, that the trainer could receive some “punishment” after the Belmont
Sweet Jesus… one of the world’s largest news outlets can’t be that f!@#$king uneducated, inept, inaccurate and misinformed.
The HORSE can not be barred from the Belmont. Not unless he is a problem horse (i.e has loading problems etc), which IHA clearly isn’t.
A trainer can lose his licence, but O’Neill isn’t going to lose his between now and June 9th. And even if he did, that wouldn’t necessarily stop the horse from running, as he could run under another trainer’s licence.
Can they really say stupid crap like that on a major cable news network?
Good points Drum. I was too busy saying no way that I overlooked the obvious.

Yes, he has a ruling against him by CHRB that he is contesting. They will make a decision on Thurday. But even if they rule against him and hand him a suspension, he, actually his team of lawyers, will immediately appeal it, which will tie it up in court for monthssssss.
The horse will not be BARRED.
I can’t believe they actually ran with that as a headline.
Exactly this. Did I miss where they actually stated who said who was considering barring him from running? They pretty much just talked about milkshaking, what it was, and DON’s violations two years ago. No actual racing officials were quoted or referred to.
Good lord the money honey jr. comes up with some crazy stuff.
No - NYRA isn’t going to bar Doug. As has been noted before his review with the CHRB for a past violation is coming up although was expected after the Belmont. Even if they did he’d do the same move tons of trainers have by naming the horse under an assistant trainer. Repeat - I’ll Have Another cannot and will not be barred. Suggesting as much is ludicrous.
I expect little else from CNN and the legacy of Turner based in one of the precious few States that doesn’t allow pair-mutual wagering.
It’s CNN. What did you expect? Research?
To be clear with dates May 24th Doug has his CHRB meeting in regards to a horse under his control having failed a 2010 test:
The California Horse Racing Board at its scheduled monthly meeting will take the next step in a case that potentially could result in O’Neill being suspended for six months.
O’Neill in the summer of 2010 was cited by the racing board for having his horse Argenta test for a high level of total carbon dioxide – TCO2 – following an eighth-place finish - of Argenta - in a race at Del Mar. O’Neill has vigorously fought the charge. He filed a federal lawsuit that was dismissed by a trial judge, and that decision was confirmed by an appeals court.
At the meeting Thursday – O’Neill’s 44th birthday – the board, during closed, executive session, will debate the proposed decision of a hearing officer that presided over the case for the racing board. The board members received an information packet in advance of the meeting, but are not allowed to discuss the situation until meeting in closed session Thursday.
There are numerous outcomes Thursday. The board has the option of adopting, modifying, or even rejecting the proposed decision, which could range from finding O’Neill innocent to a 180-day suspension. O’Neill is eligible for the lengthy suspension because of two prior TCO2 rulings against him.
There is even the possibility that nothing will be announced Thursday, because racing board members have the option of asking for additional information, or even taking over the case and hearing it themselves. All those options are contained in the state’s racing regulations.
Again even if O’Neill is found to have kicked a puppy, knocked over a little old lady, stole money from a Nun or be a shareholder in Bank of America it wouldn’t have one ounce of impact on ‘I’ll Have Another’ starting in the Belmont Stakes. Period.
Those reporters should be fired…ridiculous reporting.

Yeah, they could put their “skills” to good use at The Onion!
This is sad. We have a Triple Crown opportunity on our hands, with a horse who’s got the breeding, heart and talent to pull off a Belmont win…and THIS is what one of America’s largest news stations chooses to talk about? Its rediculous.
The LAST thing this sport needs is negative attention.
What’s also very sad is that there is anything to report like this at all on DON.
I am not excusing the reporting job but…

YES! And, they really do. That was, in fact, the most poorly researched story I have EVER seen on a major network. They sounded like idiots.

You could do similar reporting on any of the top trainers in any of the TC races.

Doug O’Neill is better than some, worse than some but by no means leading the race.
Granted I have trouble sometimes viewing videos on this ipad, but when I clicked on the CNN link, it says “this video no longer available”. Guess it’s wishful thinking that they were told to take it down?
I can’t see it either, says This Video Not Available. I am guessing an editor somewhere finally woke up and pulled it. Sheesh!
I caught that!
I happened to be walking past the CNN-tuned TV in our lunchroom at work the other day, and of course I slammed on the brakes when I realized they were discussing IHA and DON. I was appalled. What sensationalistic bullsh*t to spew on national TV!
Yes, it sucks that there’s anything at all to bring up in concurrence with the trainer of a Triple Crown hopeful - and I’m no fan of IHA’s owner, either - but for God’s sake, the sport of racing does NOT need any more bad press. Shame on CNN for making things far worse than necessary!
(And while I’m on the subject, shame on many media outlets for blabbering on about the Romney’s dressage horses and making out like the only people who can afford to have horses and ride English are multi-millionaires. Yep, that’s real helpful, too. IDIOTS.)
Here’s a Screen Capture from the Video
For those of you that couldn’t see it, here is a screen capture of the banner that ran through the entire segment. The discussion was equally inflammatory.

I certainly hope they took the segment down.
