Coat for mini dachshund?

Poor Noodles, my piebald girl, is shivering when I have to put her out to do her business. I feel so heartless.

I’ve been looking at horse-style dog blankets and have found some I like that aren’t  $55.00 . However, Noodles is the wild and crazy one of the gang and is always wanting to play.
What coat will stand up to dog tussling?

George the Basset seemed to have managed to get his off last winter on a regular basis, so any dog blanket that can stay put would be appreciated, also.

I have a weatherbeeta newmarket fleece and my bald dog has worn it for a few seasons now. Honestly I love the way she looks in the little petsmart sweaters, but the second she goes out and rolls and romps they get wet, dirty, and rip. I don’t think it was too terribly expensive and I’m about to invest in one for my new thin skinned dog.

My beagle/doxie cross has one of those fleece sweatshirts from Petsmart that she wears to the barn. It does have a hood though so that could be a bit of a disadvantage for your girl when playing in it.

I really like RC Pets and Fido Fleece for cold weather when you don’t need waterproof. I keep my dogs in fleece all winter.

When I need waterproof, I go with this coat or Foggy Mountain.

this rescue makes soft coats that might fit. You’d have to measure.

Yesterday I saw a woman in petco putting one of those sweater things on her tiny dachsund - not sure if it was a puppy or a mini-one. The sweater was okay.

BUT - please do not do this - the woman was putting FUZZY DOG SLIPPERS on its little paws. OMG. It may be small, but it’s still a DOG. Dogs do NOT need fuzzy slippers!

One thing to keep in mind… look for one with snug-fitting or small armholes; dachshunds are really good at squirming their little short legs out of sweaters and coats!

My short-haired dachshund is constantly freezing, and I have to keep sweaters on him in the house, but anytime he lies down, a leg inevitably pops out the armhole…

I use nothing but Thermatex Dog Coats from Horse Country. They are warm, water resistant, washable, comfortable, and have no metal or plastic parts.

I’ve used every kind of coat including Foggy Mountain. Thermatex coats may not be as ‘cute’ or ‘stylish’ but they WORK. I have a stack of Foggy Mountain horse blanket type coats w/missing buckles, torn straps, tears in the nylon. Their ‘snuggler’ style blankets are better, but not water resistant like Thermatex.

Also, the Thermatex fabric (woven wool to the dog, 2 layers of polypropylene weave with an acrylic top layer) wicks moisture from a wet dog. Because it wicks from inside to out, the coat is basically waterproof. Throw them in the washer, hang to dry. My dogs do not try to take them off because they are so comfortable. The artificial fleece linings on many coats ruffle dogs fur, catching it, making them very itchy. Both my smooth and rough coats will wear these for days at a time without complaint.

They are also only $49.95.

How much do I love them? I just had 3 of them overnighted to me at the JRTCA Nationals where the temps were in the low 30’s at night and the dogs had to stay in the van overnight. Totally comfortable to sleep in, the dogs were toasty warm.

I don’t know if they’re shown on www.horsecountrycarrot.com but call the store (800-882-4868) and they’ll be happy to help you out.

Noooooo, not the Horse Country catalog! I’ve resisted looking at that for almost six wistful months!

I just posted a similar question on a new thread…wooops!!!

SmartPak & Schneiders have NICE dog coats for around $20 (for my Dobes so probably a little cheaper for a small dog).

Thanks to everyone for the replies/ideas. I have been looking at the various web sites.
And I agree :lol::lol: re the Horse Country catalogue. Nooooooooooooo I will buy tons of stuff for me besides Noodles. I am a total loss when it comes to the cubbing jackets-I want that one no that one no that one…

As an aside-Noodles went “shopping” over the weekend and came back from the kitchen with a… potato. I also inadvertently (sp???) shut her in one of the bedrooms. No prob, she said, just pulled clothes off of the cedar chest so she could make a nice comfy bed. She’s my baby.
