Coat whitening products that work on black too

My horse is genetically black, but due to living out more of a deep chocolate with orange accents… he gets all the copper, zinc, oil and fly sheet coverage, plus rinsing as appropriate in drought conditions, but end of day he still bleaches. Paprika didn’t work either.

I got a bottle of Quic Black Shampo for about $8 for 16oz. It’s supposed to make bleached black horses darker and is purple colored - you’d need a whole bottle for one wash if you apply the way they say on the bottle. I did about 1/2 a bottle and didn’t notice much difference. His socks were super white tho!

Its purple colored. And I am thinking it’s the same principle as the products designed to get the yellow out of white coats.

With that in mind does anyone know if other products like Farnam Vetrolin White 'N Brite Deep-Cleaning Color-Brightening Shampoo or Roux White Minx give the same results, or are black shampoos more intense?

What about laundry bluing for black horses?

uh no just deal with it and be glad your horse is turned out.

Nothing “bluing” is going to put black back into a bleached coat. I think another one is actually black and deposits some pigment, much like a semi-permanent hair color for humans.
I am having good results supplementing copper and zinc for my bay. Since you’ve tried all the options indicated, I agree with bt - deal with it and be happy your horse is out. It’s just a coat color. Alternatively, put your horse inside during the day. Or use animal-safe hair dye before a show, I’m sure that’s a thing some people do.

My black mare used to turn to buckskin from bleaching sun and sweat. Then I started feeding straight alfalfa. Bingo,
now she stays black all summer. Very deep dark black.

I get it guys - frivolous topic! But I’m looking for answers to the question other than “stop caring”

Let me know if you find out anything about what to eat to keep the sun from bleaching dark hair. My very dark brown hair goes brassy in the summer. I’m all for eating something to keep it dark!!! Like dark chocolate. Why can’t dark chocolate keep your hair dark???

@Palm Beach pretty sure you’re just not eating enough chocolate

@Marla 100 he gets 3-4# of alf pellets per day; sufficient?

I think the Vetrolin purple shampoo works great on black hair (clean and good shine), but no, it will not darken a bleached coat. It could in theory tone down some of the yellow hue, but it will not add pigment.

I’ve known dog show people to use laundry bluing on white coats, but not black. I wouldn’t assume that the purple coloring in a black coat shampoo is exactly the same hue as the whitening shampoo - but yes I am sure it’s the same principle of adding another color to the coat. I would suspect that the black coat shampoos are adding a deeper pigment of purple.

I used a black shampoo for my black mare and it really did work. Of course it didn’t last. I didn’t put it on her white stockings but used a whitening (yellow removing) spray for those.

I think you should try it on the whole body and report back with before and after pics. It would save time if you could use the same color on the whole body.

yes yes yes that MUST be the problem!!!

The problem I would have with some kind of black dye is the state that I, the wash stall, the barn aisle and probably the barn cat would be in by the time we’d finished

Mine bleached out more than usual this year, but his winter coat is starting to come in black now. I’m not sure whether I consider that to be a good thing yet or not.

Lady Clairol.

I don’t think any whitening products are going to darken any hair.

that said you can do the old trick of mixing some black manic panic dye into a cheap conditioner and using it sort of as a toning rinse. I use the ultra violet shade in tresemme conditioner for my paint.
