I heard this was great for the coat, mane& tail, hooves, and fungus. How much should I give? My horse gets grain 3 times a day, how much should I give a day/ each feeding? In tbsp or tsp?
Honestly I would go for flax. One cup of whole flax will do all this plus Omega 3 and no saturated tropical oils
Yep, just use flax - cheaper.
If you’re going to use coconut oil then you’re looking at probably 1/2c a day or so. More if you also want calories for weight.
Horses don’t have issues with saturated fats, no cholesterol issues, but I’d prefer to use something that at least has proven benefits, like the high Omega 3 flax.
I know some people who use coconut oil, but they’ve never been able to explain why. It has no essential fatty acids, it’s expensive, and it’s a pain to deal with when it gets cold. So…why?
Oil. Yuck. I use unsweetened coconut flakes to put weight and ‘cool calories’ on my horses. Too much flax gives horses diarrhea so I went to coconut. Works for my guys. And they love it.
Of course, if you want extra nutrients as well as shiny coats you could also try black oil sunflower seeds. https://www.understanding-horse-nutrition.com/black-oil-sunflower-seeds.html
Put coconut oil ON the tail not in the horse.
And use chia seeds fed dry. He’s p ice for chia seeds at getchia.com
the coconut oil does NOT need to be washed out.
Coconut oil should go on the tail. No need to rinse
feed chia seeds from getchia.com, Better than flax
i love ground flax. get it on amazon and made a world of a difference. 2 scoops once a day. Super easy and not messy. my mare is the color of a brand new penny with dapples for days
Coconut oil goes on the outside of the horse and is wonderful for tails. Do not rinse.
Chia seeds are far better for horses and humans than are flax seeds. BTDT. I get the great seeds in bulk from getchia.com
Totally unsupported by any research and a waste of money.
In what way? Both have a good Omega 3:6 ratio, but flax is 4:1 and chia is 3:1 (roughly)
Sunflower seeds are high in omega 6, so pro inflammatory, and have been known to contain aflatoxins.
Flax is really a better choice.
Chia seeds are more trendy and much much more expensive so they are clearly better for the humans that market and sell them
I am old enough to remember the Chia Pet.
Oh my. They still exist. Who knew. Always found them kind of creepy. Like when hay starts sprouting in the trunk of your car.
Absolutely!
