Coffee ground bedding

people are using this all over my chicken groups, but I was wondering if it would work in a run in shed for the horses? It says no caffeine, but I don’t know if my dummies would just eat it? would it be like sand if they did? so many questions!

I bet it’s way too expensive to use in the quantity for horses. Also yes if horses will eat pine shavings they will likely try coffee. How can you be sure there is no caffeine?

The bag says there’s no caffeine. However, it’s also $11/35lb at Rural King, and that 35lb is a pretty small volume

How absorbent is it?
Chickens do not produce any liquid waste.
Aside from the cost - my 12X12 stalls would need at least 2 bags, 3 would be better.
The shavings I’m using now run me $4 for a 60# bag. That bag can refresh 1 stall. If I strip & rebed: 2 bags.
So, using the coffee grounds: $22-$33+ to do a stall.
Hard Pass :unamused:

The way I drink coffee, I could probably completely bed one stall per day.

Based on the image, I would think a lot more than 3 bags would be needed to put at least 4" over a 144 sqft

Even if it was only 3 bags, that’s still a hard pass

Does “great scent” mean the barn smells like coffee?

Because to me that is a horrible scent.

Does it stain? I’ve never tried to get coffee stains out of my gray horse, and I’m not sure I’d want to. :joy:

I put fresh coffee grinds in my vacuum cleaner to counter the “dust” smell it will get, so I can see how it would smell nice in a stall. I wonder how they recycle them (other than gather them from coffee shops?) and how they know there’s no caffeine in them?

I also find it slightly ironic that the bag in the picture (in the link) is in front of a stall bedded in shavings. So maybe it’s meant to be used in addition to, and not completely replace?.

I would be very hesitant to use this with horses even if it weren’t idiotically expensive.
My guess is that trace amounts of caffeine might well show up in a horse bedded with this stuff, no matter what the manufacturer says.

I didn’t even think about a grey horse and stains!!!
