Has anyone seen the Coke commercial where the voiceover says something along the lines of “If you’ve enjoyed a Coke in the past 80 years, you’ve supported the Olympics.” ?
Can you ID the 3 riders on the medal stand? It’s a quick shot of 3 men, but I’m not sure who…anybody?

OK, so I did some searching - what do you think… Could they be Frank Chapot, Bill Steinkraus and George Morris from the Silver medal team in Rome 1960?
Looking at their faces (and wardrobe), I think that is a very good guess.
I don’t know who the riders are, but the Coke ads are good. The ones for United Airlines on the other hand…

The Budweiser ad on the other hand is great. I’ll never tire of watching the horse buff up for the next year’s hitch!
I think the one bending over is Mike Plumb but then why would George Morris be standing with him? It is a mystery. I bet someone comes up with an answer before midnight tonight!
I’m pretty sure it’s Rome, 1960. Here is a picture of the stadium (note how the entrance arches match up, in sets of three)–

Could it be the German gold medal winners? Winkler, Schockemohle, Thiedemann? Looks more like them in this photo (3rd photo down):

Tackpud, yes the Budweiser commerical is the best. Love that one, too, but I do wonder what the ad agency for UA is drinking.

Can I just say, thank you for this thread? Now I know I’m not the only crazy one who has been wondering desperately who those riders are…
(Though I may have just taken an extra step toward crazy and emailed Coca Cola to ask them!)
The one closest to the camera is George.
Yeah I played it frame by frame and the one closest definitely looks like George Morris.

I think that 3rd photo down is exactly right. Good job!!
I think the USA Show jumping team has been on the podium 6 times — 1952, 1960, 1972, 1988, 1986 and 2004… If there are pictures
of the medal ceremonies online somewhere, in color, you might be able to match from same… Can you see which color medal
they are wearing? I tried to catch it but my eye’s are in bad shape.

That was back from 1968, Mexico City Olympics and I am gonna bet that was William Steinkraus accepting the medal.
That year the top 3 in the Show Jumping were all men: Steinkraus-Gold on Snowbound, Marion (Yes a British Man) Coakes on Stroller - silver, and David Broome of GBR on Mr. Softee bronze.
The dead give away are the “poofy” pants that were the norm then. And here is a page that shows a different angle of him receiving the medal:

I think that Mr. Coakes is accepting his silver medal in the ad.

Also remember, that it used to be a tradition to have the top 3 medalists from Individual Show jumping come into the stadium DURING the Closing ceremonies and be awarded their medals in front of everyone. This was evidenced at Los Angeles. I have it on my 1984 highlight VHS.

Mexico City! I was at those Olympics, heavy security and police everywhere, can’t remember why but it was a scene down
there. I seem to remember that the Canadians won gold and I think the French won silver in team jumping… I have an old program somewhere— but now that you mention it, USA won gold in individual jumping and the British took silver and bronze. Boy Emily, you have a good eye!
