"Cold feet" before horse purchase....normal?

Well…if you never click with this one, are you sure its vet issues wont put off a buyer? Could you afford to keep it or sell at a substantial discount?

I missed if this one is still Green. If its been in the job you are buying it to do for some time successfully, vet questions are less a factor. But if not, nobody can know if it will hold up to regular work in the chosen discipline.

Never assume any horse will be easy to sell for a price that will allow quick replacement. Figuring on an easy resale if it doesn’t work out is usually a mistake with more expensive horses.

I had cold feet with my last horse purchase. It wasn’t love at first ride. As a matter of fact, I wanted to get off him within 10 seconds of my first ride. Sigh. I had seen him show, knew his record, knew his whole history (he’s only 7). So I tried him again. Eh, it wasn’t love but he was for my kid and she got along with him. I wrote the check.

A month after having him I totally stole him from my kid and he is a mom’s horse. He is an ammy’s dream and I can now not ever believe I second guessed myself. I had never spent that much money on a horse, which was probably most of my angst.

I envy the people who are like “I knew the first time” and “never had a doubt”.

But no doubt, hands down, best decision (beside my kid) I have ever made. Ever.

My last horse purchase was last winter, and an import. I went back and fourth over it, especially since I didn’t have time to make the trip and try horses. I regretted my decisions when the wire parted ways with my bank account but as soon as I sat on the horse I couldn’t stop smiling! Good luck!

I definitely feel you on this. I went back and forth in buying my two year old in November of last year. Still not sure if he will get to a size I need, but he’s been a super fun project and has the best personality. I just adore him! I think he’s nice enough that even if he doesn’t make the size I need, he’ll be fairly easy to move along once we start him this spring/summer. He wasn’t extremely expensive(high 4s) and I can’t imagine the stress I’d feel buying something pricier!
