Collars on horses?

Anyone use one? There was a STB place near here that use to use them on the broodmares and possibly seem them on TB too?

My mare has been rolling her GG muzzle off. The halter is new, so it might have stretched, but it is clipped at the crownpiece loop, not usual one to tighten it up. That worked most of the time last year. Has a browband on the halter and the tassel flymask. She does not like the face covering ones and i think would make her work hard to remove!!

Thinking of getting a collar and have another piece between it and the crown piece and that should hold the whole thing on!!! Why can she not admit defeat and just wear the GG!!??

Thanks for all advise, info in advance.

Yes. I have had to use an old stirrup leather as a collar and fix it to the crown piece. Was a literal lifesaver.

When my 4 horses were proving that they were geniuses, geniuses I say, at ditching their halters in their 6 acre grass paddock, I resorted to buying mare collars from Quillin’s in KY. They have lasted for years with minimal care, and made it possible to catch the horses to put on either the regular halters (if I found them) or substitute halters. They could even be led in with the collar if necessary. I never attached the collar to the halter or the mask, but maybe that’s the way to go.

I am constitutionally unable to throw out busted up halters without removing the brass findings, so I had a bunch of large brass rings. I put one on each collar for a place to clip a lead shank. They worked well. Herd is now down to two, and they are both pretty good at retaining halters, at least through the winter. I’ve taken the collars off but they are at the ready for fly mask season if need be.

I used collars on my foals. I had to be able to catch them easily, but worried a halter has too many places for a curious foal to get hung up or snag a hoof. Worked great. I agree that a leather stirrup leather makes a great one. Beware of nylon… it can shrink when it gets wet!

A collar is also great for tying a horse that tends to pull back. You can also put a halter on them, thread the lead rope through the bottom halter ring and snap to the collar. Safer way to tie.

That’s actually brilliant and I will be borrowing this idea for my ponies muzzle.

Where is the best place to order these, leather please. I have a nylon one I’ve used to double tie a difficult horse who would pull back, but would never leave a horse unsupervised in anything but a leather one. I presently have an adolescent colt who for some reason doesn’t like being haltered in the pasture. He’s fine in the stall but goofy in the pasture. I’ve thought a leather collar might be a good bridge between the two until he’s over it.

Quillins or Tack Shack of Ocala.

Quillin’s in Kentucky. They’re on line and excellent to work with.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions etc. I tightened the crown piece a hole as it is a new halter and may have stretched, but will look into a collar.

I also use a gg muzzle on my pony and he is a genius at getting it off. Even got the halter buckle undone a few times so now I tape it. I attach the halter to a collar and it does help! During fly season I attach my fly masks to the collar too.

Thanks. Ordered from Tack Shack in Ocala since I’m in GA.

Because it is completely unnatural, uncomfortable and while she can still eat it must be like us trying to eat wearing a colander?

My mare wears hers but she is unhappy about it and happy to show her displeasure when it takes me at least 15 minutes to catch her to get it on at noon. Any other time I can call her in or walk right up to her .

Update: I used an old belt of my husband’s, cut slots in it and with velco like zipties, attached it to the halter. So far so good. My BO says she notices her rolling 2-3 times a day, trying to work it off!!! The BO usually takes the masks off about 1/2 hour before they come in to let them have a mask free chew!!!

I’m having trouble visualizing this but it’s a great idea. Can you post photos?

I wanted collars for bad weather, so that if a tree comes down on the fence line and they were to get out, they are identifiable and easier to catch. The Distance Depot has reflective biothane collars with leather breakaways, I have them in blaze orange with info tags attached. They already have a ring.

I think they have a plain black one that’s cheaper.

I thought I was the only one that did this :joy:

The collar I got was perfect for getting my PRE gelding past the stupids about being haltered in the pasture. But he’s lost the darn thing in the pasture and I haven’t been able to find it.

We went through a rough patch with bridling when I first bought my guy. He had barely been ridden in five years, so his manners needed a tune-up. I used the collar to keep him from running off with my bridle hanging from his shoulders. We went though more than a few bridles before I saw someone mention a collar.

Here’s a variation–plastic chain collars. Lots of info on how they do it at the link.
