Interesting factiod.

Shiraz’s sire’s dam is Gay Missle
A Fine Romance’s sire’s dam is Gay Missle.

In human terms that would make them first cousins. :slight_smile:

So Gay Missle was represented at Rolex by both Shiraz and A Little Romance.

Gay Missle was an incredible producer.
In 1975 she was bred to Bold Bidder and had Brave Shot (AFR’s sire)
In 1972 she was bred to Buckpasser and had Gallipiat (Shiraz’s sire)
She is also the third dam of AP Indy and Summer Squall and Lemon Drop Kid.

She has provided both the racing world and the eventing world with a great legacy.

Perhaps it is no surprise that Gay Missle’s dam sire was My Babu, sire of Denny’s wonderful event horses, including Babamist.

Lord Helpus, I was thinking about Gay Missile and My Babu myself just yesterday and thinking what a damn shame it would be if the racing world let the Herod sireline die out. Of course My Babu is out of a Lavendula daughter, and Lavendula also was a true Blue Hen. Dam of Ambiorix and granddam of Turn-To out of another daughter. One of the truly great TB broodmares for sport as well as racing.

For God’s sake sport horse people, look for Herod in your horses. The evidence is too strong that his two lines (Roi Herode and Tourbillon) produced incredible athletes for sport.

I love both those lines but they are getting harder and harder to find.

Toubillion is on the first page fore one of my broodmare (and my former prelim horse).

He comes in through Foligno/Foolish Pleasure who was not used perhaps as much as he should have been in racing. This line was used quite a bit up here in Unionville so it in several horses. Foligno produced decent turf horses, show horses and runners over fences. One of his sons won the Maryland Hunt Cup twice.

Viney, Are you thinking of Roi Herod? There are 2 Herod’s (GB and USA) but both of them are so many generations back I cannot see how every branch of their progeny can be considered a viable sport horse influence.

If you want Roi Herod in your pedigree, just get a gray horse. 99% of gray TB’s trace their color back to him. :slight_smile:

The foundation sire Herod was down to two sire lines by the 1950s: Le Sancy (Roi Herode) which is now extinct in racing; and the Dollar line of which only Ksar/Tourbillon survives today. Both lines traditionally have proved superlative in sport horses. Only the Tourbillon line can be found close up these days in racing, and the closer, IMO, the better.

AFAIK only the Bonne Nuit line survives of the Le Sancy branch, and it’s only found in sport horses. There are still a very few of those left.

The other two foundation sires are Matchem and Eclipse, and Matchem is also gone outside of North America.

I just want to say one of the BEST horses I ever met was line bred to GM… dont forget that GM also produced Lassie Dear, who is Weekend Surprise’s dam… Weekend Surprise is by and large my favorite mare to see up close in a pedigree.

Lassie Dear was bred to Roberto and produced a son who was sent for sire duty to South Africa. I forget his name, but it’s Arab or Spanish sounding. That sire was VERY tough as were most Roberto sons; but, according to something I read from South Africa, was a good producer of jumping horses.

The Roberto son is Al Mufti (1985) he is now dead (as of 2011). YOu might be able to find offspring by Deerhound, Foxhound and Wolfhound in the US.

Clever Deception is by Medaglio D Oro out of Masked Wolf she’s by Northern Wolf. Colleen also has another Stallion Confidence Game who is starting eventing this year and he is fancy. So I have posted on here more this week than I have in the last year so I’m going to crawl back to my just looking mode. You’ll take care
