Colonial Classic

It is interesting how 10 people can have 50 different experiences at a horse show.

I know some people who went- they really didn’t have much to say about it- but they certainly are not local yokels- and their horses do well at the rated shows in MD and VA and their trainers are not “second rate.” What awful things to say?

I have learned to never take complaints online with more than a grain of salt- if you had a bad experience then fine- don’t go again or write a letter and complain- and go somewhere else next time but who knows what the reality of peoples agendas are online.

As far as Ludwigs corner a wonderful show- it is apples and oranges they are both non rated- and it would make no sense for MD riders, for example to go there instead of Colonial Classic- which they are only going to because they qualified - do points from CC count for their home series?

It is shame if the show is not being run well- Harrisburg is a great venue- to each his own-though.

Just a bit of irony here… now there’s a thread titled “Lower Level Equitation…” about questionable eq. judging at Ludwigs last weekend!

There are so many finals for so many things… what do ANY of them mean ANYWAY?

Of course they are poaching clients! I laughed when I heard CC was scheduled the same weekend as LCHS. Brooke Brown had a spat with CCHSA and made her own “Freedom Series” for her kids so they would have somewhere they could win at. I’ve literally watched her pack up her kids in a huff and leave halfway through a division when her kids weren’t winning. Doesn’t surprise me the pinning was a cluster, and there were some questionable calls. What I find funny is that even though it is a “qualifying” show, they basically go down the list and if those who actually qualified don’t want to pay the ridiculous class fees, they just move down the list to fill it. I think the idea is great, but wouldn’t have my students pay to go to a rigged show.

Spent the weekend at Ludwig’s Corner, and the weather was amazing. There were a few issues, but for the most part it was enjoyable. Seemed to be A LOT of confusion calculating Champion & RC, and there were several that were apparently announced incorrectly but then showed up as announced online. Interesting how it can be announced one way, but when you go to pick up a ribbon after another trainer/parent has been up there the results magically changed and the points were added incorrectly. Oh well, there will be politics no matter what show you go to… just disappointing for those involved.[/QUOTE]

Companion piece to the thread on lower level Eq just started by same poster but these remarks are complete with personal and insulting claims. We really try hard not to go there…or most of us do. Can get the point across without name calling.

Sounds like both shows were full to the max, so what’s the problem with running on the same weekend? No show manager wants to run their show on the same dates as another nearby popular show. Chances are this is the only date the arena is available to them.

Being a local myself, I have heard straight from the horses mouth that Freedoms goal is to provide CCHSA with competition and offer alternatives to the local circuit. Great, CCHSA heard feedback and now offers hunter derbys, always nice prizes, and jumpers. The complaints that people had about CCHSA (judging and slow rings) are pretty much now an issue on both sides of the fence. But hey, if you have green or sale horses like me you can’t beat the mileage for $80 until you are ready for USEF.

Ludwigs is becoming a more popular venue than ever and I wonder if we will ever see an eventual 4day show. This year we saw Bruce Davidson bringing over low level jumpers for mileage and Andy Kocher bringing mini prix competition. LCHSA is definitely not without problems (I suspect some long time attendees need to realize we can’t hold rings anymore the show is much too big now despite their heavy patronage) but check out this fabulous article by Deloise in America for a great review of LCHSA: https://deloiseinamerica.com/2016/09/06/ludwig-who/

I actually stand corrected many riders from the Baltimore Area did go to Ludwigs Corner- even some qualified for the Colonial Classic - They all had an amazing time two had never been before- and I think I might have to check it out next year- it sounds like a lot of fun and a great show!

CC was not the same weekend as LCHS before this year.
