Color question. What exactly is brown?
That is a good question. What is the offical color of a brown creme? Single and Double Dilute?
Color folks would love to know LOL

I think smoky brown is probably the most common term for the single dilute on brown. On another board we went on and on and ON on what double dilute on brown should be called, and some were just…ew LOL Brownlino? Ack!

Yes, I have been patiently waiting for an announcement. At the same time, wondering who gets to decide something like that. I suppose maybe the person who officially discovered the gene.

So why shouldn’t it follow that “smoky brown” is a brown horse + cream? :D
Because the word Smokey indicates that there is no “A” If you tested a smokey brown, the results from UC Davis would come back no different than a buckskin

why does smoky indicate no Agouti? The “smoky” in smoky black refers to the dilute. The black refers to no Agouti

Of course, because UCD doesn’t look for At  Test that smoky brown at Pet DNA and you’ll get At?

That’s how I look at it too. Smoky simply refers to the dilute gene. I think the reason many of us started using the term Smoky Brown is because it just rolls off the tongue better and sounds much better than saying something like brownskin. Yech! :disgust::wink:

I’m betting smoky brown will end up being the term used for a brown single dilute…but really curious to know what the double dilute brown will be called.

So really we should have smokey bay instead of buckskin.

We already have dunskin and buckskin so why not brownskin.

As for the double dilute form of a brown based horse, one ponders.

Brownskin just sounds… ick lol

Buckskin has long been established, well before any knowledge of brown, literally going back to “skin of a buck” as a color

Below are a few photos of our brown mare - she has a jet black mane and tail. But as you can see, no black points on the legs or head.
Do you know for sure she’s brown? Was she tested black based or have a black based foal out of a chestnut sire? Or a homozygous black parent?

She looks like she could easily be chestnut to me. IMO

fwiw, i believe my mare is brown… or maybe seal brown… she has a golden “tone” to her darkness

If she is chestnut where does the black mane & tail come from?

![](y mare is the same as mbms colour wise
She is what I consider a Brown/Seal Brown

Sooty. It’s not unusual for chestnuts to have dark manes. Or even be completely “dark”.

This horse is 100% chestnut. Notice the black mane and tail

Same chestnut base color, just with the added cream gene to make here palomino

Definitely seal brown

It’s not really black, it’s just really really dark red, and many darker chestnuts can appear to have a black mane/tail, or sooty can make it just that dark

Yep, definitely seal brown- see how dark the legs are

This is my brown mare. Notice her brown muzzle and area around her eyes. She also has gold around her girth area.
