I think smoky brown is probably the most common term for the single dilute on brown. On another board we went on and on and ON on what double dilute on brown should be called, and some were just…ew LOL Brownlino? Ack!
Yes, I have been patiently waiting for an announcement. At the same time, wondering who gets to decide something like that. I suppose maybe the person who officially discovered the gene.

Because the word Smokey indicates that there is no “A” If you tested a smokey brown, the results from UC Davis would come back no different than a buckskin

That’s how I look at it too. Smoky simply refers to the dilute gene. I think the reason many of us started using the term Smoky Brown is because it just rolls off the tongue better and sounds much better than saying something like brownskin. Yech! :disgust:
I’m betting smoky brown will end up being the term used for a brown single dilute…but really curious to know what the double dilute brown will be called.

So really we should have smokey bay instead of buckskin.
We already have dunskin and buckskin so why not brownskin.
As for the double dilute form of a brown based horse, one ponders.
Brownskin just sounds… ick lol
Buckskin has long been established, well before any knowledge of brown, literally going back to “skin of a buck” as a color

Sooty. It’s not unusual for chestnuts to have dark manes. Or even be completely “dark”.

It’s not really black, it’s just really really dark red, and many darker chestnuts can appear to have a black mane/tail, or sooty can make it just that dark

This is my brown mare. Notice her brown muzzle and area around her eyes. She also has gold around her girth area.
