color question: when will my bay filly get her black points?

so the filly is 5 months now, she seems to be shed out and is a lovely bright bay. Mane and tail are definitely black, but I thought I’d see more black points on her legs by now.

One thought is that she’s wild bay and the white socks cover up the smaller black points? Or is common that black knees and hocks don’t show up until they get their winter coat? Her hocks are slightly darker but knees are not.

thanks!

To me it looks like your filly is right on track to develop her black points(and she is very nice!)

I went back and looked at some pictures of my now yearling - she had virtually no black points (besides the pastern on her one non-marked leg) at 4 months. At 6 months her black extended mid way up the cannon. 7 months she had black points almost reaching her front knees - but only mid cannon on her hinds. At a little over one year old her black points look pretty finished up front. I think her hocks are going to darken up more over the next few months.

This foal already has clear black points up to the knees and hocks, so I definitely wouldn’t call it wild bay. Some bay foals get full black points with their foal shed, but it’s very normal for it to take some time for the points to fill in all the way – sometimes it takes years.

Agreed with above, I can definitely see her black points, could be all she gets, or she could get more black, time will tell. Just imagine if she didn’t have socks, that would all be black and you would definitely notice it more

she is gorgeous no matter what color the legs become! I’ll take her off your hands

Yes, she clearly has the black points already on her hocks and knees. The lower legs will be the last to develop the black hair.

She will be much more black when she sheds in the Spring, though it could take a few years for the black to fully develop. Even then she may have seasonal darker and lighter black/tan which is very common.

If she didn’t have those gorgeous white stockings, you’d see the mostly tan with a hint of black all the way down her legs, with her fetlocks being more black. It takes the bays a while to develop the points.

She even still has baby flaxen in her tail, and that tends to go the way of the lower legs, getting darker over time.
