i’ve heard some rumbling these shows might not run this summer does anybody know the status?
Last I heard was they are all cancelled, including the summer series.
LEG just posted stall reservation forms for the summer series and said prize lists are coming.
The summer series isn’t cancelled. My friend in CO told me that she just received her prize list (or maybe an email that the prize list was coming). Anyways, it was a definite indication that the summer series is still on.
Hmmmm, I live here in Colorado, and two trainers involved with COHP said the park is shutting down and the shows will be cancelled.
Local show manager hosting a show the week before circuit said both her show and summer circuit are on schedule.
I’m so glad if things are running for the summer after getting cancelled in the spring, but it doesn’t bode well for the future if things continue to be this dicey therefrom year to year.
Completely agree. What will happen to the horse community in that area if CHP closes? Between the exorbitant cost of land, plus inaccessibility of shows…I wonder if trainers will just up and move away.
Having lived and shown here for almost 50 years, COHP is just another venue that comes and goes. CHJA was lazy and tossed its entire hope into a single facility to be the major show venue. Now, with Bellisimo and his financial issues and the fact he doesn’t really give a crap about horses (he is about the land), it won’t surprise me COHP dies. COHP didn’t create the show environment here. There were plenty of facilities before and there will be others after.
They are running June and July and taking stabling and rv reservations from trainers. An email went out on Tuesday with a link.
It has been difficult to try and plan the show schedule, for the last couple years the Colorado horse shows have been a little wishy-washy if they are going to run or not.
With all due respect, I also have been showing here over 20 years (although in dressage) and I will say that the loss of the CHP to the dressage community is really a problem–we have no other facility to host a large regional championship and no facility that has enough stalls to allow everyone to have a competition year. Many of us are trying to either leave the area, or are making plans to show out of state if we can, or are changing disciplines. The loss of the build out of the National Western equestrian center (due to lack of funds) has really been the last nail in the coffin for a lot of us. We also lost all those boarding stalls.
Wait…… they are not building the new National Western complex now?
Where did you see this? I lived in CO for decades and still have many riding friends there. We talked about NWSS just the other day. I Googled it and didn’t see any indication that the expansion is cancelled.
I don’t believe so. Denver voters denied the $190M in bonds to finance the project.
Denver’s National Western campus has no funding for a new arena after voters said no. Now what? (denverpost.com)
They have dropped the equestrian complex from the plans now that they lost the funding. They would like to rebuild the stock arena.
Of course… because it’s only important to support more hipster areas. I mean, they can’t even control the constant car theft and random crime, so it really doesn’t surprise me. I moved here to have more connection with horses and have a better work/life balance and it’s becoming increasingly more difficult to manage that without shipping all over the country if you want to be competitive.
You are mistaken. This bond was intended for Phase 6 development. The original bond in 2015 was for Phase 1 and 2 which includes a new Livestock and Equestrian Center (https://nationalwesterncenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/01-NWC_MPdoc_FINAL_web-3.3.15.pdf) Page 112. This includes new show facilities.
Thus, there will still be a new horse show facility even with the defeat of the recent bond. The “arena” you are thinking about was to be a facility for concerts and other sporting events, taking the place of the coliseum (it would be demolished) (Phase 8).
