He is looking much stronger, that is for sure.
This is a sincere question for those who have know about the refeeding thing, how long do they need to be getting fed so carefully?
It seems like all the wonderful photos we see of Asombro he is never eating anything, so I assume he is still on a very strict carefully calculated diet. How long until he can just do the whole free choice hay thing or whatever?
I’d be tempted to clip some of that hair off, too. Who knows what scurf is living under that mop of a coat.
This has been addressed in the comments on Facebook.
He gets groomed frequently.
His coat looks unthrifty because of his starvation.
They are not doing more until his weight gets better, they do not want him dealing with being chilled, etc.
They can groom that all they want, and it’s still trapping crap against his skin.
I’m sure he’s going to be just fine, though! Just saying what I would do. I’d rather him have clean skin and blanket him.
While clip and blanket can make sense in some situations this is a horse that lived in a sling covered by a tarp for a year. I think the best thing for him is not to be covered up now. Horses look like crap right now in March. I’m sure they are on top of any skin medical issues and he will start shedding
This was my thought too.
Add that with his issues getting up, having a blanket on might make it even harder for him to get up on his own.
I have to assume that there have been hands all over him and they know the condition of his skin under all that hair and they are making the best decision for what they are dealing with.
I doubt the stress involved with a body clip would be conducive to improved health status at present.
He’ll shed out with grooming.
I’m excited they updated about his next farrier appointment. It looks like it will be in early April and they will address his back feet at that time.
I’m rooting for the little guy.
Not to mention, he might have PTSD from a blanket, reminding him of the tarp.
Removing the natural oils makes it easier for them to get pneumonia. I bet he is compromised anyway with the abuse.
If you put feed on too quickly, it is not just the gut, it is also the hooves. They will end up with corns.
As he went for a run and a buck he is obviously feeling better, so they are doing right by him.
Of course he is compromised by the abuse. He looks like a malnourished maybe yearling. But I’ve never heard of clipping causing removal of the natural oil, the oil is still there on the horse’s skin, bathing yes, but how would removing the natural oils make it easier to get pneumonia? @Ghazzu please fill me in. I know blanketing and bathing isn’t the best way to help this poor boy, but about the quoted post?
Oh totally! I’m ignorant to neglect at this level, it just bothers me seeing how yucky and scruffy his coat looks.
Oh yes I meant bathing with shampoo. You usually bathe before clipping to keep your clippers sharp. Trying to clip that coat I think would cause a lot of pulling and not be a pleasant experience.
Understand that, it is awful looking, but the stress likely wouldn’t be good or him, and with good nutrition it will drop of soon enough.
Not sure how many of you are new to following RRR, but this is NOT the first time they’ve dealt with a horse in this kind of condition. Heck this isn’t the worst case they’ve taken in, handled.
I have been a follower & supporter of theirs for a few years now. I have full confidence & faith in their ability to properly support/care for Asombro in the best way (for him) possible.
We are still getting occasionally into the low 30s with a lot of wind. He is doing great, give him time.
When I was bringing back a starved horse, she had a coat much like Asombro’s, very patchy, dirty, smelly. A couple of weeks of good groceries on the regular, she shed out the coat to the point she was practically bald in places while her body rebuilt a new, healthy coat.
Asombro looks so perky and happy now. I hope they toss her butt in jail for what she did.
Yes, I think we need the poor little guy to just recover on his own terms, and on his own time. It’s nice to see him trotting around.
