Comfortstall/stall mattresses

Anyone have experience with ComfortStalls/stall mattresses? I am considering installing 1-2 as a start to see how they do. I am worried about 1. Durability, 2. Ability to install around auto waterers and 3. Ability to install where I have wood on the sides and concrete along the front of my stalls. And does anyone have an idea regarding price on them per 12 by 12 stall?

A barn friend won a stall mattress as a door prize at our local equestrian trade several years back. It seems to hold up good, but horse pees and poops almost 100% in his run out paddock. To me it feels almost too soft, unstable.

This one has I believe a rubber type matting top over a filling of rubber crumbs. Mice did get into the crumbs and start to make a nest in the adjoining stall. It is anchored in some way too.

They are extremely expensive IIRC. This door prize was from a distributor who preferred to give away the demo model they set up at the show rather than try to pack it up again.

I have the higher quality interlocking softer stall matts. I’ve been very happy with them.

I’ve got concrete floors in my barn and had contemplated doing a mattress system. I didn’t get a direct quote but from what I’d found they were over $1000 per stall so I decided just to go with interlocking mats.

In my research I found a video on SoftStall that was very helpful, and looks like they’ve done an update and upgraded the cover on one of the stalls so you get to see how its held up.

He’s got draft horses so they definitely get tested!

Thank you both, they are very expensive from what I can see. I was thinking of doing one in my personal horse’s stall, then working out some sort of financing system for any boarders who wanted to install them as a long term board hike to have access to the nicer system?

Does that sound insane? We have high performance dressage horses. But I can’t afford to simply install them for everyone. Then anyone who wants them can pay a bit more a month for the nicer footing. Just brainstorming here…happy to hear comments from anyone!

@Scribbler to your point, I have runs on my stalls and 3/4 of horses pee and poop out there when they are dry enough to be available (I close them in deep snow and standing water). I am a firm believer in turnout and the runs cement that idea…horses want to be outside if they can.

I didn’t notice any difference in the barn I boarded at that had them. Most horses still slept out in their runs, and the ones who slept inside still got fetlock and hock sores and overall didn’t seem any better off than any other stall. However, this barn also uses the stall mattresses as an excuse to bed VERY skimpily (only 2 bags of pelleted bedding per week, any additional bags at a significant markup and if you provided shavings you have to muck yourself or pay an additional labor surcharge) which made the barns extremely foul smelling and didn’t encourage the horses to sleep on them. I left that barn fairly quickly. Maybe they’re amazing if you actually, you know, use bedding? I couldn’t say.

Wow! 2 bags of pellets a week? Yeah, that isn’t going to be an issue here. The horses spend 12 hours a day in turnout paddocks and my stalls are bedded. horses only get sores when the sensitive ones decide to roll when we have frozen ruts and no snow in the pastures and it is 10 degrees F, instead of in their properly bedded stalls that don’t freeze. I haven’t ever seen one lay down in the 12 x 20 runs attached to the stalls they are in the other 12 hours. The paddocks range from 1-8 acres.

I got my horse the stall mattress system from Ramm. I think it’s called the Thorobed? I’d have to check… I got it bc he had hock sores that just wouldn’t stay healed. The barn owner at the time had one installed to see how he liked it which is how I found that model. It’s been in 11 years and I’ve had no issues. We have half day turn out and my horse likes to pee inside only  so it’s gotten plenty of bathroom use. Before Lamplight had mats I had a set of the interlocking ones for horse shows. I definitely need more shavings to keep him comfy (more than just bc he’s in the stall more). It was definitely a worthwhile purchase.

I don’t know price/install details, but my barn has them. I can speak to the bedding lightly piece though; no issues with that. My horse likes to lay down and sleep a lot and he is cleaner than he’s ever been even with the stalls not being bedded deep. They use the bagged shavings and some sort of absorbant pellet and it works really well. I was skeptical at first, but have no complaints.
