Common Expressions from The Horse World

Ok, I’m bored. It is Friday night and I’m writing a voluminous Federal Update for a Monday morning meeting and I’m resenting it. Per usual, my mind is on horses, not work. So, I’m spending some time thinking up common expressions used by the public at large that derive from the horse world.

I offer up some obvious choices:

Horseplay;
Having someone “on a loose rein;”
Getting a “leg up” on the competition;
“Rode hard and put up wet;”
“Back in the saddle;”
“If wishes were horses;”
“unbridled” passion, etc.;
being “spurred on” to do something;

What others are out there?

Pas Petit Detail- The reason (or so i have been told, someone correct me if im wrong) that people say “have to pee like a racehorse” is because a) some racehorses are taught not to pee unless in their stall, and so have to go purty bad when they get there b) (which may relate to part a) if they win, when they are taken back to their stall they have to do to horsey evquivalent of peeing in a cup to test for drugs.

And yes i am a dork who has no life outside of horses (and yes, that is also why im posting @ 9 on a fri. night, cause i had to go ride my horse)

Since I’m a medical person -

healthy as a horse (don’t tell me that when my pony has a fever and a runny nose!)
horse pill (as in, “I couldn’t take the medicine you prescribed for me because it was as big as a horse pill”)
