Comparing Ovation and Romfh breeches

I’m trying to decide between trying http://www.doversaddlery.com/ovation-slim-secret-full-seat/p/X1-35681/#ProductTabs or http://www.doversaddlery.com/romfh®-international-breeches/p/X1-35644/ .

Someone on another thread said they felt Romfh ran small. Anyone have experience with their breeches sizing? I’m usually a 28 or 30 (hips/thighs one size bigger than waist sometimes). The Ovation breeches have sock bottoms which can be hit or miss for me. I’ve tried on sock bottom pairs in other brands that I could hardly get over my ankle.

I like the wide waistband styles and don’t have a preference for full seat or half seat. I am tall but have found that some regular sized breeches work just fine in terms of the knee patch placement. I’m looking for something <$100 that will hold up for light schooling up to 5 days a week.

I’ve ridden in both, and in fact currently own 2 pairs of each of these. The Ovation have a bit of a higher waistline (which I like as it keeps my shirt tucked in). The Ovation breeches also wear like IRON; you cannot destroy these! They wash up great. The fabric is just substantial enough to do you some favors if you need to be held together a little, too. I’ve never had an issue with the sock bottoms but I do take just an extra half minute to ease my foot through instead of yanking and ripping things.

I’ve got nothing bad to say about the the Romfh, either. They have the velcro bottom; they fit well; I personally don’t like the fabric as well as on the Ovations (it’s a bit more “crinkly” and not as soft). But they hold up and wash well, too. As noted the waist sits just a little lower but is not a hip-hugger.

In my experience, the Romfh breeches seem to be made for Spongebob Squarepants. They are always too tight through the thigh, yet ridiculously enormous in the waist. I tried a pair on in the Dover store at one point, and I could barely get them over my thighs, but then could literally fold the top of the breeches down with ease and expose my entire butt. It was hilarious. I can’t imagine who those breeches would fit, but I’ve seen them on people who appear to be normal shapes.

I have not tried those specific Ovation breeches, but the ones I have tried fit me GREAT (Ultra DX - knee patch).

That sounds like my experience with certain brands… perfect fit around the waist but practically ripping over my thighs. Sounds like the Ovations might be work assuming I can get the sock bottoms over my calves.

I also have both styles and totally agree with what 222orchids said about them.

I do chores all the time in the Ovation ones, and I have a few that are several years old. Only problem with them is when I sat on a pair of fiberglass textured steps, they got a few tiny pulls in the butt.

I have the same experience with breeches not fitting me in the thighs and I love ovations for schooling. They’re not quite a great color for showing, but I like them a lot.

I’ve never had ovations but I do LOVE romfh’s! They fit like an expensive breech.

Check out the Horze Grand Prix Breeches, love them and they wear like iron, think they are $100 a pair.

I love my Ovation Slim Secret. I bought a pair at Rolex this year and liked them so much I ordered another pair and they are all I’ve worn all summer. They wear great and are super comfortable. I love the sock bottom - I have large calves and have had no issues with the fit on these.

Another vote for the Ovations. I’m a big girl and they fit great the sock bottom goes over my calves just fine. The fabric is great just stretchy enough. I do mostly dressage so I love the full seats they are nice and sticky

Is the full seat material suede for one of the manmade concoctions?
