Composite Stirrups ... Help?

Although I ride very little these days, when I do it is in a dressage saddle with composite stirrups. These are fine with my Ariat Lacers, fine with my Dafna Blizzard/Winter boots, even my plastic/rubber/PVC Cottage Craft ‘mud’ boots.

They are not fine with my inexpensive Devon-Aire dress boots: they’re very slippery. Is there any I can put on the tread that will help? I thought maybe even Vetrap, but perhaps someone has a better idea?

I’ve never used composite stirrups myself, so not much idea what will fit on them.

Cashel makes a product for adding some ‘cush’ to your stirrups that is also quite grippy - http://www.jefferspet.com/english-stirrup-cushion/camid/equ/cp/QL-2A/

It’s not an attractive solution and no good if you’re showing, but would work for just tooling around.

We used to wrap our irons with Sealtex Latex Tape - http://www.doversaddlery.com/sealtex-latex-bandage/p/NB-2608/ it’s made mostly for race track horses and will stick to itself but not other stuff (much). It’s also used to wrap metal bits for youngsters. You can use one roll per iron if you need a little cushion, or just half a roll to keep from slipping. Generally one side of the tread area will end up just a little thicker, so keep it even and put the thicker side toward the “little toe” side of your foot. I rode 25 milers and conditioned and it seemed to last about a year before I had to replace the tape.

I have the Compositi Reflex (Composite Wide Tread) and they don’t slip at all even in my show boots.

But I also have these for my regular irons and they are fantastic!!!

I also have the wide track ones and don’t have an issue with slipping no matter which boots in wearing.

I don’t have wide track irons, but I did buy a pair of those Super Comfort Iron pads (that Fancy posted a link to above). WELL WORTH THE MONEY! :yes: They wear like iron and attach with zip ties so I would think that the zip ties would allow the pad do stay wide enough for a wide track iron. I bought them for my Aussie saddle as that came with the metal “english” Aussie irons and I couldn’t find a regular rubber pad to fit.

(Come to think of it, those are sort of “wide track” so the pads definitely could work)

I’ll look into those pads. Extra cushion can’t hurt the knees and hips.
