Concerned about eventer price tags. Where does this leave our sport??

4*horses for sale for a “cheap” (ha!) amount? They usually won’t vet and are priced as such.

If you paid $250,000 for your horse, would you or could you run XC with her (him)?

There are some event horses (I can think of 2) who sold for more like 1,000,000. And yes…they were ridden out xc.

Yes…there are cheaper UL horses…but typically they are priced that way for a reason. They are typically strong in one area (like xc) but not going to be super competitive. They may not be fancy enough to be a competitive YR horse or require a better rider…or have some soundness issues. OR a rider just has to sell quickly.

I don’t see any problem with the price or event horses. No…they are not priced like a show hunter…but there is less demand for them.

Wow, I really would like to see the actual dollars and sense (pun intended) of all these money-making hunter/jumpers.

I have seen the price of the horses. I have shown in H/J so I know what the entries and stabling cost (and what little prize money there can be). The upkeep (feed, board, shoes, vet) is as high in H/J land, or perhaps even higher if you are in a regular training program or do full board.

Have you included the cost of transport (either your own or paying for hauling)?

I just don’t see where is there tons of money to be made? Sure, if you’re Ian Millar… but if we talk about the rank & file, I just don’t see it.
