Conditioning plan for 2L

Hey all-can you share your conditioning plan for 2L?

There was a really good one shared on Ride IQ if you have the app.

Depends a lot on your horse’s type, age, soundness, current fitness level, previous fitness levels. And what you have access to, such as hills, roads, track, water treadmill etc.

I’ve used hills a lot, plus extensive Hacking for the long slow fitness base. You can check out Jimmy Wofford’s book Training the 3 Day Event Horse and Rider, he has fitness plans in there. I’d condition similarly for a long format now as I did when there were Roads and Tracks and steeplechase, perhaps a bit less.

I wish there were more published articles on conditioning plans. My own this year :

Mon-off
Tues-Trot 20-25Min
Wed- flat
Thurs-Jump
Fri-Flat
Sat- Trot 20-25Min, 3 4Min canter/gallop
Sun -flat

As I got closer I hit 25 minutes, and maybe at the 6-week point I was only doing two 4-minutes. Every ride had a 30 minute walk hack before. Sometimes in a flat, I’d go trot 10 minutes on a hill after. My trot sets I did consecutively, so I trot for 20-25 minutes straight. We do have some elevation so consistently going up and down hills.

For my big horse, whose tiny bit of draught % still runs heavy, I wish I’d done a little bit more. Very interestingly, my TB mare who went through the 3*** Long did the exact same conditioning schedule and it seemed just fine.

I was doing a similar routine with one less flat but a cavaletti/polework day and was cantering 3 6 minute sets instead of 4. This was for a younger ISH gelding who is around 38% blood.
