Confused about usef/ushja membership

Im planning on doing primarily local shows on the CHJA circuit ( Colorado hunter jumper association) and my horse and I are CHJA members. I’m thinking about doing an A show- do i need to join USEF or USHJA or both for my horse and I? Im a little confused about the difference between the two and which one I need. Im probably only going to do one ot two A shows this year, the rest CHJA. Does it make more sense to just pay the nonmember fee at each show?

If you show at an USEF rated show, you must be a member of both USEF and USHJA. If you are only going to do a couple, you can do a show pass at each show, and it will cost you $60 per show ($30 for USEF and $30 for USHJA). So, if you do more than a couple of rated shows, it’s more economical for just join both. If the CHJA shows you are doing aren’t rated, then you don’t need a USEF/USHJA membership for those. For the rated shows, your horse will also need a USHJA registrtion to compete.

I am only doing one rated show this year, Estes in CO, so I am just going to pay the fee. Past years I always paid the membership but I was doing three or more shows.

If you are showing in an amateur division that pays out prize money you must join USEF to declare amateur status or else you are not eligible for the prize money…I was only planning to do 2-3 rated shows this year so was not going to join but was told by the office that I had to or else I would have to return all prize money :/. I did not join USHJA.

I think it is wrong that in order to show at rated shows, you must belong to both groups. USEF I ubderstand but the other with having the horse needing to be a member and the owner, rider, trainer (and I think all their relatives!) it adds up to a chunk of change before you even pay an entry fee!
