My wonderful horse is borderline IR, and the vet put him on Thyro-L.
Thyro-L is levothyroxine. Levothyroxine is illegal.
What should I do? I don’t want to take him off his meds, but I don’t want to get in trouble, either!

What competitions are you competing in?
As far as I know, Thyro-L is only controlled in FEI rules, as you can see here (https://www.usef.org/documents/drugsMeds/drugsMedsGuidelines2014.pdf) it is not on the forbidden list for USEF (the rules that USEA competitions use).
This article (http://www.thehorse.com/articles/32970/changes-to-usef-fei-medication-rules-for-2014) lists it as only changing on the FEI lists.
If you’re competing FEI, I suggest you call them directly for clarification.
Thanks! I’m just a Smurf, so I’m good. Phew!!
My horse is (borderline) IR and she’s not on any medication at all. I manage her weight by feeding beetpulp and just a handful of low starch grain on top for taste. And a dry lot. That’s key.
This was a horse who a few years ago ate like 2 lbs of Ultium 2 times a day just to keep weight on. Now she’s an air fern, looks great and her IR is under control.
I’ve spoken to a few vets about IR and none of them recommended medication. They say the best control of IR (in non extreme cases) is through diet and exercise. So I’m curious, OP… Can you share more information on why it was prescribed?

Haha. I just actually read who posted this. Can you give more information, via PM if needed, on why it would be prescribed?
The BRM and I are planning to try a BN event in May… exciting!
