Constantly kicking off a shoe

Help. My nut keeps losing the same shoe in turnout. I wonder if his buddies are helping him get it off, or if he is kicking the boards/stall. Any suggestions?

I would look more at the kicking behavior than kicking the shoe off… that is a stall vice that might resolve by a change in management… does he absolutely need to be in a stall?

If he’s consistently kicking the wall like that he’s not doing well in a stall. I’d go to 24/7 turnout before he hurts himself. The shoes coming off would be the least of my concerns.

Agree that I would be more concerned about the actual behavior than the shoes. He has a reason for kicking- isolating that reason is your best shot at fixing the behavior. I would probably start with a second veterinary opinion, preferably someone who is an out of the box thinker. Just because he’s not lame, doesn’t mean there isn’t a physical cause.

Exactly…

@RileysMom he’s communicating that he’s uncomfortable for one reason or another. Kicking is the symptom. Figure out why he’s kicking and you solve your shoe problem and have a happier horse.

Can you move him to a stall with attached paddock? He might be bored out of his mind at being a big horse in a 12x12 stall. He is acting out for a reason.

What is it made of? My horse never kicked anything off as far as I know, but he can’t keep aluminum shoes on. They are gone within a couple of weeks. I can’t figure out why.

Hoof boots might be a good alternative. I don’t know of any other solutions unless you want to move him outside into a turnout situation. My horses argue whenever stalled for longer than a couple hours. It’s not food related, but usually when they finish their food and get bored. Another option might be to switch neighbors and try a different horse in the stall next door.

I feel like I have seen this post before - maybe try searching to see if that person ever figured out a way to resolve the issue.

Try a kicking chain to see if you can break the behavior.

In the original post they stated a kick chain was not effective.

OP said " He gets plenty of turnout"

Is there an option to set up a camera to record him in his stall so you can see what is happening during the times he does kick?

That is her estimation. Horse may not agree and he is thinking up ways to amuse himself and pass the time…

I agree, some interpret plenty of turnout different than others.
