Contacting Jockey Club

My gelding, Automatic Deposit (Keasby), passed last monday. How/should I contact the Jockey Club to notify them of his death? I do have his papers and everything but I was just wondering how to go about this since I’ve never had to do it before.

Thanks

Sorry about the loss of your horse. :frowning:

See below for info regarding reporting a death.

16. DEATH REPORTS

The death of a registered Thoroughbred, or foal for which registration is pending, should be reported to The Jockey Club Registry Office within 30 days after the death by submitting a completed Report of Deaths form, or through Interactive RegistrationTM at registry.jockeyclub.com, and returning the Certificate of Foal Registration, if issued.

As a gelding, if he was through with his racing career and off the track I don’t think that it would really be necessary to report his death to TJC.

OK thanks I was just wondering since he was my first OTTB and I hadn’t even had him a year yet.

Thanks again for the info

Very sorry for your loss :frowning:
I looked him up, and it looks like he had a nice little race record too.
I’d keep the papers as a memento.

I say report it. Perhaps someone in his past might be curious at some point.

Also, if you report the death, then I think the name would become available again?

From the Rulebook:

E. Names of horses over ten years old may be eligible for use if they are not excluded under Rule 6(F) and have not been used during the preceding five years either for breeding or racing.

Names of horses that were never used for breeding or racing may be available for use five years from the date of their death as reported.
