Contendro I: Size vs. Stride length

I have a small (15.3) jumper mare with scope and a terrific mind, who I am looking to breed within the next year or two, preferably from one of the C lines.

I came across Contendro I and fell in love. His technique is superb, his gaits are elastic, his legs are clean, and from what I’ve heard he throws good minds.

From what I’ve heard, though, he does not throw height. My mare is not very big (although her parents are both bigger than her). Size is not so much a concern for me, as long as height is no smaller than 15.2, since I prefer smaller horses. But I am concerned about stride length. My mare has an average stride without a lot of reach, elasticity, or articulation.

So my question is, how confident could I be that breeding to Contender would add stride length (regardless of height)?

Two friends of mine overseas are HUGE fans of Contendro and have used him to produce dressage oriented offspring. The chose him to add some jumper lines into their mare base. I am not quite sure how to answer your specific question of stride length as I have never heard one discuss that particular trait as it’s own entity…but I admit I have never bred for a jumper! However, if you want to discuss gaits he is known to produce horses with very nice uphill, big canters and above average trots…hence why he has also been successful in producing dressage offspring.

I have seen him in person and even in his advanced age was quite impressive in person. Beautiful frame and front end. He was trotted in hand for us and was very elastic in his body with a great hind end(even at his age).

Obviously he has been quite successful in producing horses for sport. He has produced something like 24 licensed sons, a few top placing SPS mares and last I checked had above average scores for both jumping and dressage talent.

I am not sure if I have helped you with your question at all, sorry.

Contendros gaits are good, but he does not improve walk and trot on his offspring. He does not destroy it though.
His canter on the other hand above average and he is throwing that. You are quite safe with improving canter in all areas. You may want to look at the hindleg conformation of your mare as that is one of the negative sides.
He is quite consistant in throwing height and color. The average Contendro offspring is about 1,65 - 1,69m and has the same sort of bay color than himself. The licensing where his first sons appeared was very very astonishing as one looked as the other and I think there were alomost 10 of them.
