Convenia for Cats?

Have any of you had this prescribed (or have you prescribed it) for a cat with a cough? My friend’s vet gave it to her 10-month-old in an injection and now she is worried because she has read about adverse side effects and posts from people whose kitties have died, apparently from it. There are also some online posts about kitties whom it helped.

So I thought I would come to COTH and ask COTHers about it.

I work for a specialist and we frequently use Convenia for cats. I have not heard first hand nor experienced any adverse side effects. Personal opinion… Pretty well tolerated, stings when it goes in a bit. We use it mainly for skin disease (dermatologist) no experience using it for coughing. Helps the superfical staph infections in most cases.

Thanks.

I have had it used in many cats and kittens, including off label uses, such as a bottle baby, very sick, getting it because we were out of options. That kitten lived, and in all the cats I have had get it, none have had a reaction.

I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many doses I’ve administered without incident. That said, it wouldn’t be my pick for respiratory crud.

I haven’t ever had it given to one of my cats for a URI, if that is what you mean by respiratory crud.

We give it to cats at the clinic I work at pretty frequently. Many people can’t pill/medicate cats so many will choose the slightly more expensive Convenia injection instead of having to deal with medication at home. We’ve never had anyone come back with adverse reactions. Not sure we’ve ever used it for respiratory stuff though… generally skin crud or something like UTI’s.

I have a cat with a uri and was offered convenia.
I was going to do it, but the cat is eating her clovamax in her food, so saving me some money.

I asked about risks, and the vet tech didn’t think there was anything more than a typical reaction which would be rare.

I will be watching this, since I’d like to know if there is increased risk.

Convenia is heaven sent for cats! It has been given to a couple of my cats with no side effects. One shot and you are good to go! Much better than daily dosing, much better.

It’s a little pricey once you get into a heavier critter…

I gave had it given to my old girl (17) twice in two months or so for UTI/kidney failure issues. She had no issue with it and rallied really well for a little while.

The biggest risk I have heard as far as reactions is that if the animal happens to be allergic to it you may have to treat the reaction longer since it is a slow release drug. However I have yet to see that happen, and have personally administered several hundred doses. It has been a lifesaver for many animals and owners to be able to avoid daily medicating.

Good for your friend for doing her own research and not just blindly trusting what she is told. This has been a wonderful drug, albeit a bit pricy for larger animals. I would not hesitate to use it in one of my own again.

For me personally, it would be a last resort only, to be used only if all other available antibiotics fail. I have heard WAY too many instances from people on the cat forum I frequent where cats had adverse reactions to Covenia…and if they do, it’s in the system for TWO WEEKS! With something like Clavamox, you can stop giving it; once the Covenia is injected, it’s in the cat and can’t be removed. I simply would not make that choice if there was another route to go. I have yet to see an instance where Covenia is considered the only appropriate antibiotic-in fact, for many conditions, other methods are preferred; Covenia is generally used because it’s more convenient for people who do not want to pill a cat, not because it’s the best option in most cases.
