Coolback Fleece Saddle Pad

I recently starting using this saddle pad.

I had heard really good things about these saddle pads so I decided to try one. I didn’t really notice it over the winter but now that it is a little warmer after my lesson there is sweat all under the bottom on my saddle from the pad pulling moisture from my horses back. The pad is visible wet at the top and the underside of my saddle is as well. Is this bad for my saddle? Is this normal? TIA

EDIT: Fixed typos.

I ride with this pad and never noticed any sweat on my saddle. They don’t absorb sweat so they stay dry and the sweat runs off the horse. I wonder if your saddle doesn’t breathe. Is it wool flocked or foam?
I have used this pad on a Steele plantation saddle(leather panels) and a old old western saddle that had new (fake) sheepskin on it. Neither saddle was ever wet but I had to get used to the sweat running off the horse.
I first starting using these pads(not tolkat) 20 yrs ago and still have some as they never wear out, used to be very cheap coolback pads and came in all colors.
good dogs beds for $20 again not Tolkat.
I wonder if you got a woolback instead of a coolback. If they sent you a woolback accidently then it would make sense the pad gets wet.

The woolback pads are much more popular among the endurance riders.

I like the woolback better. My horse seems annoyed with the coolback pad. She is a total diva, so you probably can’t go by her.

My saddle is wool flocked, I double checked and it is Coolback not wool. The sweat does run down his sides as well but seems to be pulled to the top of the pad. It doesn’t seem to bother him and my saddle is synthetic but I was just curious.

Hum, I do all of my trail riding (hot sweaty 100 degree temps in the summer) in a CoolBack pad and have never noticed any wetness under the saddle.

I often use a ThinLine pad (which I am sure does not breathe) between the saddle and the CoolBack pad and never noticed any wetness.

As for your saddle, I would be sure to clean and condition the underside with oil (or a leather conditioner), as getting wet with sweat often is NOT good for the leather, and will lead to drying out / cracking unless it gets cleaned and conditioned often.

Bottom of the saddle is synthetic so I don’t have to worry about leather cracking. Although it can’t be good for it. I do not have anything between the pad and the saddle so that might be why you didn’t notice it?

(PS. Horse in your signature is beautiful :))

OP:
It’s because your saddle is English style synthetic. I had the exact same thing happen to me with my cool back & english wintec.
I now ride in a Abetta endurance saddle with a coolback & have not had the same problem.
The English flocked panels have synthetic skin & the western is synthetic fleece lined.
I never had any back issues with my horse, but was only doing arena work & trail riding at the time.
Hope this helps.

Glad it isn’t just me… I really like the pad and it isn’t hurting the saddle I just have to make sure I dry it off and don’t just stuff it back in the tack room.

Horse doesn’t seem to care either way about what pads I use.

Thanks!
