How difficult and how bad would it look if I removed monograms off a wool cooler and a scrim? Has anyone done it or know the best place to have it done in Northern VA? TIA.
You can remove them (carefully) with a seam ripper, but it’s going to leave a mark where they were–as the the stitches punched holes in the fabric. I did it on some old coolers I inherited with a horse, but they were not suitable for showing/going out in public before or after.
I sent a cooler to remove an old monogram and replace with something new to The Clothes Horse. They did a great job and it was very reasonable at around $100. It was a two-color embroidery of my retired horse’s name that i had replaced with a two-color embroidery of my last name.
Ah, my favorite winter-time activity. It is the perfect job for someone with OCD. Seam ripper, monogram, and the tv on.
Over the years, I have successfully removed monograms from two wool dress sheets, an Irish knit sheet, and a scrim sheet. The better the quality of the actual sheet, the better your removal site will look when finished.
YES, it takes a while, and YES you have to pay attention to what you are doing. You don’t want to make the stitching holes any bigger by pulling on the thread to try to hasten the removal. And the stitching uses two layers of thread, so you will have to deconstruct each stitch, and the edges of the letter. (once you start to deconstruct the monogram, you will see what I am trying to explain.) It is a bit of a puzzle to start with. Always start with the widest part of the letter, don’t start at the end of the letter. The end is where the needle from the monogram tends to put a ton of tiny stitches. Way too hard to start there.
For all of the monogram removal projects I’ve done, the finished jobs looks wonderful.
Except - sadly, trying to remove a logo didn’t work well. Too many stitches per inch, over a broader area than a monogram. Also the stitches tend to stick to the white backing material with a logo far more than with a monogram. So be aware of if you are thinking of removing a logo.
Yes. Katrina at the Clothes Horse removed a monogram for me and then replaced it with another. It was beautiful. you can mail it to her in NJ and she will mail it back. I believe the removal was the same costs as a new one.
Long road trips are excellent for this activity, provided that you aren’t driving. But it’s very tedious and I’d pay someone to do it before I did another one.
The wool ones come out better then the synthetic fabric as far as leaving a mark, the linen like fabrics hide it well… The wool fibers sort of fill on the holes within a short time, the synthetics just stay holes, depends on the specific fabric how bad it looks. Had a waterproof cotton sheet come out kind of gnarly. The little, sharp cuticle scissors are pretty handy along with the seam ripper.
Great activity for binge watching.
Thank you all. I will be contacting The Clothes Horse for this project as there will be several to have done.
You can also use little mustache trimmers on the letters.
