Coolest (as in ventilation) skull cap?

My trusty Tipp Sportage is starting to get a bit rank plus it’s 3 years old (from mfg date). It’s what I use to ride with about 95% of the time and I am thinking about replacing it with a proper skull cap. I have a CO JR8 for the other 5% of the time when one should look best.

As you all know the Sportage is super well ventilated, and I don’t think there’s a jockey skull out there that comes close in the breeze department (or is there?).

So, which, in your opinion is the best ventilated skull cap? I ride in all weather up to about 90 degrees. Most I’ll spend in the saddle is about 2 hrs, mostly during late spring and summer while roading hounds.

when I was looking for a ventilated skull cap last year, the only ones I could find were by Charles Owen
They have a couple and they vary a bit in head shape so you can likely find one that fits
International used to make one, but I couldn’t find it when I looked.

My husband who normally rides in a CO skull cap uses a Troxel Sierra in the summer. He switched to that when he felt his head would explode in the heat. Not pretty, but does the job. More manly, too.:lol:

Hmmm, I was afraid of that. I may just buy a CO skull and another Tipp and wear the Tipp during the hottest part of the year. Whoever came up with the Sportage is a genius.

On the manliness issue, I’ve always thought skull caps with the silk’s brim turned up look bad a$$ on guys.

I’m going to guess it’ll be the Charles Owen 4star, as they put a lot of features into it to keep riders cooler. I just got mine in the mail today and it’s January so I can’t confirm that yet. I don’t think there’s anything cooler than the Tipperary Sportage though.

Tipperary also makes a skull cap. I think it’s called the Titan. Looked like any other skull cap with the cover on.

Irh is coming out with one this spring I think!!! I saw the original version and it was very well ventilated.

I’ve tried one on and it just does not fit like the Sportage AT ALL. Which is weird because the Titan looks just like a Sportage without the major ventage.

OTOH, the CO J3 fits like my head was used as a mold.

Bumping up as I need a new skull cap and during the LONG NorCal summers I am riding in 90+ heat 4-5x/week. Former cap was a J3 and it was hot hot hot and heavy - not going back there again. Any reviews specifically on the Titan, CO Ultralite Euro, or the IRH Eventer Pro would be amazing! Or tell me your favorite other lightweight skull cap brand!

I get hot pretty easily and I honestly find the CO Pro II keeps me cool. I also wear a hairnet, which I swear helps the heat.

I ended up just removing the brim from the Ovation Schooler and putting the cover off my CO on it. No one has noticed yet

Thanks pologirl and highflyer! Pologirl, I’m a crossover from jumper/eq land so I always wear a hairnet too at least I am doing one thing right! I think some of the local tack shops have the CO Pro II in stock, so I may go try some on tomorrow.

Just curious why you prefer a skull cap to the Sportage? I know they’re ugly but I couldn’t find anything more cool or comfy,and a good price when I have to replace…

Blugal are you asking me? I have never even tried on a Sportage. Although I have looked at their Titan skull cap online and wondered what it’s like. Mostly I want a skull cap because several years ago when I owned a J3, I received a VERY cute custom silk that I only got to use maybe 3 times, and now that I have a horse who can do baby events, I wanted to start using it again! LOL.

Will definitely keep your advice in mind. Might be a smart way to go in the end.

Yes, I’m just saying for $70, it is an economical schooling helmet, very cool to wear. Then save your good helmet (and cover) for shows. If you fall off schooling, you’re only looking at a $70 replacement. As far as I know, Charles Owens and the like are going to set you back $150-200 or more…

I have a CO Pro II and it is the most ventilated skull cap I found that fits me. The CO Eurolite seems to have about the same amount of ventilation but these 2 helmets do NOT fit similarly. They are made for different shaped heads so if one fits you, the other likely won’t.
I used to have an IRH skull cap that looks like the eventer pro. I think the 2 COs have more ventilation than the IRH I had but this newer IRH may be different

I have the Tipperary Titan, and have ridden in the Sportage for years. I like both and bought the Titan because I like the Sportage so much. I can’t compare the Titan to a CO skull cap as I’ve never tried one on.

Tack of the Day has them every now and then - that’s where I bought mine. I think it was less than $40.
