coolest short dressage coat for petite rider

I’m looking to replace my Pikeur Ascona jacket for something a little shorter and cooler. I’m in California and it gets I’m 5’2 and slim, and usually wear a size 0P in regular coats, and even the size 32 Ascona is slightly big on me. I would also like to try one of the shorter dressage coats so that I don’t end up sitting on my jacket, and a double vented jacket is fine. Wish list - as cool and breathable as possible, available in navy or charcoal, fitted waist, short cut. I used to have an Equine Athletics coat in a size 2 that was pretty breathable, but the color bleached out and they only carry them in black.

I’ve been looking at the Romhf jumper jacket in navy, which is a four button jacket and looks like it could work. Some of the shorter pikeurs look lovely, but I’m not sure how breathable they would be and I would probably need to find one of the few they carry in the junior sizing in a size 32, or a style that runs small. Any recommendations?

I have a Horseware jacket that is short, cool, navy, and comes in a large range of sizes. Bonus it is also inexpensive! I am petite and it fits better than Animo…

I also recently got the Horseware jacket through smartpack it’s a great price and really quality. Light weight short comes in lots of sizes including xs. I’ve got the black will wear it this weekend for my first show looking forward to seeing how it feels to ride in.

The pikeur softshell coats are fantastic. I have the Ghia. Not only is it great in hot weather (only slightly hotter than wearing a polo shirt), it’s also wind and water resistant. I’ve ridden in wind & it was a great windbreaker. I’ve ridden in rain & water beads off it better than goretex. Also machine washable. Truly amazing fabric!

Animo!

Also Animo

I think the Romfh ones are really cute. And, since the designer lives in CA, I’m sure she has your climate in mind. Plus…they are machine washable!

Kingsland, Ariat, Romfh, Pikeur all make a technical fabric coat now - they are so lightweight! Wool be-gone!

The technical fabrics are a lot cooler than the old wool, that’s for sure. I have two technical jackets, one by Arista and one by Grand Prix. However, in another thread I started the new FITS mesh jacket throws even those under the bus for comfort.

It is a shorter jacket, maybe not as short as some of the new styles out by Animo, but certainly no where near as long as the old Pikeur Diana style coats.

It does run a bit big size wise, so that might be an issue for you. I highly recommend trying it though.

Well, I found the Romfh Jumper coat on sale on amazon for $135 including shipping, so I’m going to try that. I really like the look of the Pikeur Skarlett, but they seem to run a bit bigger than the Ascona so I think it might swim on me. I have thought of ordering the junior Skarlett in a size 16, with the thought if it doesn’t fit me I can pass it on to my 12 year old daughter, who is also starting to event. I’ll update after it arrives. I like the concept of the fits jacket but I think it might be too big, and I’d rather get a navy or grey jacket since black washes me out. When I was twenty black looked fabulous, but now that I’m a fortysomething not so much.

Ditto. I am a hefty 5’10" and I wear the large in the FITS Zephyr, so you’d definitely want to stay in the smaller sizes, but they do not get any cooler than that. And it is cut quite fashionably short.

Has anyone tried the Equiline Gioia in the X-Cool fabric? I saw it at a show and it was a beautiful jacket, and they offer it in very small sizes. Not sure I want to spend that much on a coat, but they are beautiful.

I just got it and wore it for one Show. Very happy with it.

Rules gurus: would the Arista Modern Competitor jacket be USEF/USDF acceptable, or is that stand up collar a no-go?

I have been sorely tempted by the Equiline Gioa, but wanted to update and say that I got the Rompfh Jumper coat in a 8R and it fits very nicely. I’m usually a size 0 or 2 petite, and it fits me well and has quite a bit of stretch. They had it on closeout on tack of the day for $65 so it seemed worth trying it. The navy is a fairly conservative color and not too bright, and it looks like it will work for both dressage and show jumping (I event). For anyone who is interested, calevo has the Equiline in small sizes for under $400, and it is a lovely coat. I tried it in the 32 and it fit nicely, although I suspect the 30 would also fit since it has a lot of stretch. It has a lot of bling though and I’m not sure if it would be machine washable because of that. I also had the chance to try several Pikeur coats when we were in Kentucky at Pony Club and Young Rider championships and found that the adult pikeur Skarlett was too big even in the smallest size (32), but that the children’s Pikeur Skarlett and Mayla fit in a size 14 (168). The children’s Pikeur Skarlett does have bust shaping in the teen sizes and was fairly flattering, but the material is the same as the adult coat and fairly heavy. The Mayla is a stretch technical material and pretty cute, a bit like the Sarissa. The size 15 (172)and 16 (176) kids sizes were huge on me and bigger than the size 32, so Pikeur overall seems to run big. If FITS came out with an XXS I would buy it in a heartbeat, but alas the XS was too big. I’ll post later about how breathable the Romphf turns out to be, but I’m hoping it’s cool enough.

I just bought the Horseware one that I think everyone is referring to for my 12yo daughter. It was around $109. The XS is supposed to be a 2-4 but it runs small IMO. I’m a similar build to you and I’m not sure I could fit in it. If I can figure out where she hung it up I’ll try it on.

I sew pretty well and was thinking of taking her old jacket apart to tinker with reverse engineering a pattern. It’s so worn that I feel guilty passing it on.
