Cord/Rope Girth

I want to try out a cord/rope girth for jumping. Anyone have any experience with one and know where I can find one? Need a 56"-58" and they are all so short!

This goes to 54" : https://www.ridingwarehouse.com/Ovat…page-OVAC.html

This one says it is a mohair blend. They only have to 54" on the site but the description says it goes to 60" https://adamshorsesupply.com/centaur…h-2810518.html

If you want it just to be string those are options. Real mohair is more pricey. On the plus side, it’s actually something that people make because if you have the cord and buckles, you can just weave it into a girth. The endurance people like these girths a lot.

You might be able to get a long girth from this company: https://www.windridertack.com/store/…ol_Girth_.html

And you can have fun with them too…

You asked about experience - I have one that I use for a dressage saddle on a horse that had problems with rubs, and I was very satisfied with it. I did specifically get real mohair for him since I was trying to solve a specific problem, which is that his circumference is shorter at his elbows than 4" behind his elbows and so girths were digging into him.

I have two for a small pony who takes a 34" girth, which is also hard to find. One is real mohair, and the other is a brown synthetic type of cord. The mohair one is definitely softer, and seems preferable to me, but the pony really goes about the same in either girth, so apparently he doesn’t care.

The barn I’m catch riding a horse from uses them on all their horses. They are definitely quite comfortable for them, but they can stretch a fair amount. It’s one you want to keep an eye on when you’re riding to make sure it’s really tight. Personally I prefer the professionals choice girths, they don’t need to be quite so tight, so the horse’s like them. But I think either is preferable to a leather girth.

I use this one: https://www.pelham-saddlery.com/saddles/STUBBEN215.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhI3hxeya5wIVCr3ACh1GRQM0EAQYBSABEgIaPfD_BwE

They go up to 60" and come in brown, which I prefer over the white. They aren’t mohair, but work for my purpose.

Thanks everyone! This has been helpful!

I’ve switched to using western mohair cinches on English saddles for several horses, and really like them (so do my horses). I’ve had some “girth ends” made by a local leather worker, the most recent has sliding ends to distribute the tension equally (like an old jumper girth I have). So each girth end has a single wide latigo with holes for the cinch buckle on one end, and the double english girth ends on the other. The western cinches you choose must have a buckle at each end. The fact that it takes up 6 to 10 (adjustable) inches for each girth end makes the regular western cinch length what you need for an English girth in total length once assembled. The western cinches often have that wide part at midline ventral, makes them nice for stability. And though high end string western cinches are fairly expensive to buy new from a tack store, nice ones are often offered for cheap at Pony Club and communal tack sales from western people who seem disinterested in them these days, following a “trend in fashion”.

Amazon carries a selection a selection of both western and English mohair, and nylon type.

My nylon ones are Stubbens. Every time I see Ingrid Klimke riding with a string girth I think “They’re good enough for me!”

Did you find one? I just saw this thread- I was shopping for a 54” and due to a miscommunication ended up with a 58”.

Thread is 4 years old - I hope they found what they were looking for.

Omg. I read January 20th, not January 2020. Oops.

Stubben makes them.

I have always used string girth with my English saddles. Mine are synthetic, recent purchases were brown on a bay horse.

I love them for price, easy care. Put them in a laundry bag with a load of jeans, hang to dry. I can use a fresh girth daily if it fails to dry overnight. I have never found them to stretch, though it may need tightening while in use over several hours. My western girths are the same on a horse. Saddles get looser during a long day of riding.

I hate the upkeep of leather girths, have waaayyy too much other leather stuff needing my attention. Prices are astronomical to own a variety of sizes!

I LOVE string girths!
