Are there any breeders in U.S./Canada breeding to Cornet Obolensky and if so does anyone know of any young stock in North America? I’d like to purchase a prospect and appreciate any opinions or ideas on him?

I absolutely adore Cornet, unfortunately the semen is not easy to work with. I knew in advance the frozen wasn’t good, but after more research I was prepared to still try. Tried last year with 2 cycles with one of the best repro vets, a young fertile mare and no luck. Ended up putting my mare to Cornet’s Stern, took the first time and now have a beautiful filly that could pass as a Cornet. Cristallo I and now II are ones to watch also.
I heard they are concentrating on London 2012 and limiting collections for Cornet, but maybe we could have a better chance to have him and better quality semen after he is done in sport.

Well, I can’t speak to breeding to Cornet - but I am lucky enough to have a mare out of his first foal crop (out of a Pilot dam). When I bought my mare 4years ago, I didn’t know a thing about Cornet Obolensky! I just knew that the little mare in front of me was a 16hh bundle of power and scope!
Now, I don’t know if it is the CO, the Pilot or the apparent lack of dental work before I got her, but I will say that my mare was significantly happier when ridden in a hackamore.
Other than that, she is an absolutely lovely mare so I am always torn between breeding and riding her! She had a really nice colt by Wittinger VDL in 2010 who was one of the top five jumper foals on the KWPN-NA keuring tour that year and is in foal to my own (ex-)stallion for 2012. I’ve had some pressure to put her back undersaddle… so we’ll see how the next foaling goes.
