Correct colors of a hunt vest?

Ok,…where are you “best turned out” guru’s…or specialists on hunting attire?
I bought a two sided vest a few years in VA while on a hunting trip. One side is yellow, and the other is a yellow and black plaid on a white back ground. This was bought at the Old Habit in Marshall, VA so I’m assuming a ladies vest with both sides finished has a place being worn on both sides…

I am familiar with how to wear the canary side…but what is correct to wear with the plaid…?? A frock. hunt coat, etc? It’s not seen much here in FL!

I have the exact same vest (from Old Habit). I would wear the canary for formal with my melton and the plaid with tweed for cubbing/by-days with my patterned stock ties. Can I confess to how much I love the patterned stock ties with tweeds? Just looks so lovely when they are complementary colors.

Do you mean Tattersal check, instead of plaid?

I always wore that with my black frock coat in UK.

Canary with Navy Blue.

Things are different here though.

Yes I believe it is called tattersall.
Usually I wear the canary on formal days and the tattersall on informal days.

Tattersall for ratcatcher, canary for formal. But I have seen people with a really nice tattersall after the season started. Not fall colors like you normally see in a tattersall, (greens, browns, rusts) but a bright yellow and blue with black. Pretty snazzy.

Don’t know how “Traditional” it is but no one swooned from the shock of seeing it so I guess it’s ok.

You know, I don’t think I’ve seen those reversible vests except at The Old Habit. I thought that was a really neat idea.

Don’t you get hot in a vest that far south?

OMG YES
I don’t usually wear mine for the actual hunting unless it’s really cold (which it sometimes is where i am in Jan and Feb,it’s just too d&^* hot)
but I wil put it on to attend the breakfast.

I saw a green vest last weekend at a joint meet and am sort of groovin’ on that.

Wear whatever colour suits your taste. I have a range to chose from.

True, I’ve never worn it in Florida. I do “hunt around” the East, and sometimes need different weights… In fact, I haven’t worn this one much at all. I have other lighter weight canary vests that I usually end up using. This one intrigued me because of the yellow and black on white plaid. It wouldn’t go with any of my ratcatcher jackets…which are all in the “colors of fall” which is the correct coloring ( I ws once told they should be the colors you see when you look on a fall landscape…rust, brown, gold, pale blue, etc…I’ve even snuck in a great lavendar shirt under the appropriate jacket…) The yellow and black plaid looks like it should go under a black coat…as in formal. Guess that’s why I never wore it. I’ve never had my question answered. Perhaps I should call the Old Habit, where I purchased it to get my question answered for sure…but thanks all!.

Oooo…was it Dard Hunter Green? My favorite.

FF - I’ve seen that vest and God knows there are a lot of attire nuts around here. I swear - no one fainted when they saw it. If you bought it at The Old Habit - I’m sure it’s fine.

The canary should ALWAYS be worn for FORMAL-formal occasions (such as high holy days), and is always appropriate othertimes. The tattersall on a white/cream background may be worn on less-formal-formal days (such as the regular season hunt days). Tattersall on a colored background (such as blue, green, gold, etc) should only be worn during cubbing or informal days. Of course, hunts that have specific colored vests (such as those on our Board of Governors get the right to wear the MH apple green vest) are always acceptable at that hunt.

Give me a break!

I don’t even own a canary vest anymore! Too mundane!

I own a multitude of colors…

If you have your colors at Keswick you can wear a hunter green vest that matches your collar. Farmington’s is Rebel gray.

My favorite is my burgandy vest from the Golden Vale in Ireland.

In France, each hunt has it’s own magnifcent colored
vest that matches the vibrant color of their frock coat.

The most important aspect of your vest is that it serves a purpose; to provide warmth or smooth the lines between paunch and hip!

As I said, each hunt may have their “own” vest color that is perfectly acceptable for one to wear when you get your colors or have a position that gives you the ability to wear it.

If you do not belong to a hunt that does that, however, the standard and most “formal” color is still, and has been in this country, canary.

And if you have earned your colors with PVB, you can sport this sharp vest!

However, not everyone can rock the Russian hat or the pink & green lucky bunny belt.

Very Stylish

That’s quite the outfit.

Our foxhunt hunt has a blue vest to match the collar. I wear a canary vest Basseting, that matches their colors. I’ve got a tattersall vest and another plaid vest I used for cubbing. Then I’ve got a burgundy vest for my beagling coat to match its collar.

PW, that burgundy with the green must be stunning.

I don’t think I have a nice picture of me in my green beagling coat with our Buchanan plaid on the collar where you can also see the vest. Snazzy.

I’d love to see pictures of everyone’s kit. It’s one thing to read about the livery in the Hunt Roster, but it’d be fun to see pictures.

Just curious - why the Buchanan tartan, particularly? Sorry for being clueless; I did try googling pvb, but it didn’t come up with anything remotely huntlyesque, sadly.

OOhh not to hijack the thread here, but I have a question about vests as well…

I am just getting into the hunting world, have hunted a full year now (spring informal, cubbing and formal) our formal season ends early as we get snowed out about this time of year…

Anyhow, I have a black hunt coat, a heavy weight, and a nice frock coat, a brown hunt coat and a nice tweed for informal, a black hunt, black field boots and I just found a pair of brown field boots on ebay (so excited for them to arrive) but I am missing a vest! I can’t afford to buy two vests, expecially if I have to go new, so if I am only able to own one for a little bit, which is best, canary or tweed? I have tried scouting most of the hunt attire pages I could find but everyone seems to be different? My home hunt isn’t picky, we stick with formal turnout but flexibility is fine as long as you look good doing it, or so I have found. BUT I will be hunting for a month in Aiken this year, and I want to be turned out correctly. I have heard there are wardrobe police down there! So can I wear canary with formal and informal dress? What about a tweed? Does it have to be tweed on white/cream background? I am partial to tweed, just seems more fun, but since I will be in Aiken for their formal season, should I suck it up and go canary?

Also, is it likely to find a used vest in Aiken somewhere? What would one expect to pay for used? New? I have seen lots advertised online in the $100-$120 range new, but I am a bargan hunter and that seems steep to me! I’d rather buy used, better quality than new, lesser quality…

Thanks for your infinite COTH wisdom!

You’re not clueless at all!

Try googling Paradise Valley Beagles. Not sure what’ll come up these days.

The founders of the hunt are Mr/Mrs Bohannan, so they chose Buchanan tartan for the colors.

Bwwwahahahahaha.

The Old Habit has a reversible vest - tweed on one side, canary on the other. I’ve never seen it available elsewhere.

Two vests for the price of one - check it out. Oh look - they’re having a sale! 20% off!
