Correct fit of French link bit

Hello.
I recently bought a French link D-ring snaffle bit and wondering which way round it should be facing? With single jointed snaffles I check to see if the two sides come completely together for the correct way but I’m not sure with the double jointed? Does it matter?

Also I have a 14hh appendix that I just purchased. The previous owner said he takes a 4.5 inch bit so that’s what I got. It looks so small. How to know if it’s the right size? Might be a silly question… But with the d ring but the sides are right at the corner of his mouth…

I got a French link snaffle to try as he does not seem accepting of his single jointed snaffle. I tried the French link yesterday but he didn’t seem any different. Still resistant to the bit, and chews on it but not the good kind of chewing . His teeth were looked at a few months before I got him.

It’s similar to the single joint - the “curve” of the mouthpiece should curve towards you, as that is how the curve would naturally and gently curve over the tongue of the horse. (Hope that makes sense!)

Could if be you have it set to high causing the bad chewing. The curve of the bit is the same as any other. Think of the curve of a smile to the horses mouth.
