Just curious what a typical week of showing at DIHP runs. Understand it could vary horse to horse and trainer to trainer but any general ranges would be helpful!
Last time I did the math, for show fees, not including trainer, stall, groom, splits, it was about $2K
Including training? Or just show bills?
Stalls were about $400-$600/week from what I remember. For a jumper doing 3-4 classes a week plus a classic, I would say you’re spending about $300 in class fees For hunters doing two divisions (pro days plus weekend) plus a classic, it would be closer to $700. Add on to that any misc office/USEF fees and you’re somewhere in the ballpark of $1100-$1600+. And that is without any extra classes, ticketed rounds, derbies, etc.
In terms of day fees and grooming, that usually runs around $1100 + grooms tip (I usually tip $175/week) for 7 days IME. Braiding was $400-$600 depending on if you braided for pro days and if you did tails.
Housing and other travel splits for trainers and grooms really depends on how many people from your barn go. I usually expect about $400/week, sometimes less, sometimes more.
Housing for yourself also depends on what you choose. RVs, Airbnbs, and hotels are all common choices. There are tons of Airbnb rentals in the area but they can get pretty costly with fees. I’d say you’re looking at around $175-$300+/night all in. Most of the Airbnbs I’ve been in there were $200 ish a night for two bedrooms, not including tax or fees.
Obviously, if you’re paying to have your horse hauled, then you have to consider that cost too, but that is just too variable depending on where you’re coming from and if it’s a commercial hauler vs a friend.
There is food on site, or you can go to the grocery store. They also have VIP for $500/week which has food and snacks.
I would expect to spend no less than $4k/week with all of that considered. More if you’re doing hunters/eq, need braiding, and/or do any special classes.
Hope that helps! This is all based on a 2023 trip edited for typo
I’m going this week and have the math down to a T. Entries and splits are about $2k but it completely depends if you’re doing hunters or jumpers, if your trainer has a personal horse (or two) that you pay splits for, VIP table split, etc.
I do the jumpers and my trainer does minimal extras, so I’m expecting my entries/splits to be under $2k. That includes stall, bedding, feed, etc.
PM me if you want the full breakdown!
My office bill last week was about $1900 including the initial deposit. One division of non-nominated jumpers; four days of showing. That included splits.
Grooming/training fees plus tip will probably come to just under $1300.
Plus shipping, AirBnB, etc. i went to the market and got yogurts for breakfast and salads for lunches so the only food I bought at the show was a couple of drinks from Kevin and a diet coke one afternoon after my class got delayed over an hour and I was parched.
I’m admittedly not up on the A circuit billing practices, but can you explain why you would be covering costs for your trainer’s personal horse? Am I misunderstanding what you are saying here?
I believe that was a tongue in cheek comment about the semi-regular discussions we have over splits (in general), and trainers running their horses through the splits without paying in (in particular). That’s not normal IME and the ethics of it has been debated before.
Just under $2k to get out of the office sounds about right for a venue and show like DIHP, but I don’t have personal numbers to contribute. As with most shows, housing, training, and transport are the biggest factors!
Lol ok thanks. I was thinking wow that’s an…interesting…arrangement
My show bill last week was about $2500, which included the initial deposit and splits. Braiding was $460, grooming was $520 (not including tip), and $300 to the pro who rode my horse in one division. This doesn’t include my trainer’s bill with hauling. I live 1 1/2 hours away so just drove daily.
Sometimes trainers pass on their personal horse’s splits onto the clients. So, they do not pay for their horse’s bedding or feed, nor do they pay for tack stalls/extra stalls being used (dressing rooms, grain, etc).
They only pay for their classes and stall.
Well that’s pretty shitty. 🤦🏻🙄
Welcome to the world of the AAA show.
If helpful shipping typically costs around $500 from the LA area. I’m not sure if San Diego is any cheaper.
Just wrapped up week 4. Was in one jumper division with a classic on Sunday, and my bill at checkout was just under $1200. With hauling, Airbnb, car rental, grooms, etc I’ll end up paying about 5k a week.
I hope you had fun!
I think it depends on how far you are traveling with hauling, the number of clients/# of splits, whether you will have braiding costs, how many classes entered, and your personal travel costs. There is some variability there. It you are looking at just office show fees, I paid about $1750 which included stall deposit and splits this year.
I did it on a very tight budget and paid about $3.1-3.3k for a week total (minus hauling) when all other fees were factored in.
Edited: I forgot about the initial deposit when factoring in office fees
So much money.
Wow - those prices are staggering!
How much are you guys paying for a braiding job? I’m in a completely different location and just happened to be on this thread out of interest, but I paid $90-125 mane and tail last year. These are lovely braiding jobs.
My stalls were max $250 for the week. These are Gold shows.
My total weekly braiding bill for Thermal this year was $460.
Hi. I just got back from a week. Between hotel, car, flights, trainer split, VIP, stall, braiding, shipping, grooms fees, DIHP and class fees I came to over 8k.
