Cost for Microchipping

I was planning to microchip my horses when they get their spring shots, and the vet is quoting me a price of $66 plus any costs for registration. Does this sound about right?

Yes. That is the cost of the microchip. Since the needle is large and the chip goes into cartilage, many vets numb the area which would be an extra cost. Mine was done when my colt was down for gelding, but I know that many people and vets prefer to have the area numbed.

Just got my quote today, $60 per horse.

Yep, I have always paid 60 to 70 dollars per horse.

That seems reasonable to me.

Do you think it is too much? Not enough? (You asked so I assume you thought it was wrong in some way.)

I guess based on earlier threads about the new USEF rule I thought it would be a little lower, perhaps closer to $40. This vet tends to be on the high side, so I thought I’d check.

Farm in central VA is offering a ship in clinic day at the end of this month for mircochipping for $25 per horse

Or if you are comfortable with injecting, you could do it yourself for just the cost of the chip. There are plenty of companies that sell the kits. I double checked with USEF and was told a vet did not have to implant.

I am in north-central CT and paid $50 last week. I use CT Equine, Dr. Mike Reilly.

Injecting a microchip is not like giving an IM shot. The horse is given a shot of numbing medicine. When that has taken effect, the chip is inserted in a big muscle closer to the withers than the poll. He might be a little sore for a day, so I did not ride the following day. But now I forget that he even has a microchip
