Cost of a Pre Purchase (especially Rochester/Palmyra, NY people!)

I am from the Buffalo area and I am having a PPE done on a horse outside of Rochester (Newark). My vet wont be making the two hour drive, so I asked the owner of the horse to give me a few names of different vets in the area for me to chose from. The one vet that she gave me that I was able to get a hold of said that the PPE (no radiographs) was going to be $395! :eek: Now, I haven’t bought a horse in 6 years, but isn’t that a little high for just a gen. exam/flexion test? The horse is a prospect with no retraining off the track, so its not like I am going to be riding her around for him.

What do you guys think? What have you paid? I am obviously getting one since she is an OTTB so no check is not an option…

AND if anyone in the Rocester/Palmyra/Newark area have a good vet for me to go to that will cost a little less, Please let me know!

I live down south…so I would expect your prices to be higher than mine. I think I paid somewhere in the $300+ (no more than 400) range for just basic (no radiographs) but I also had his teeth done at the same time (he passed, so was ready to go ahead and get that done).

Now for just a simple lameness exam, I paid $75…He flexed his hind legs, general once over and watched him lunge. Found nothing wrong. The purpose of this was merely to find out if he wasn’t getting flying changes because of my poor skills or if he was lame…vet told me to learn to ride better.

Did you try Genesee Valley Equine in Scottsville? I’ve had my PPE there, but also have my horses shots there as well. They are very good. PM me for number and names of the Vets.

Not sure on cost, as I never had PPE done on my 2 horses, but I’d recommend Genesee Valley Equine Clinic (esp. Dr. Boatwright)…only vets I trust.

$395 sounds about right for a full PPE. My last PPE was done in the Northeast and cost about that WITH radiographs-but my vet at the time gave me a huge discount because we worked closely together because of an equine science course I taught-otherwise it would have been in the $500-600 range.

It included a lameness exam on different surfaces on straight lines and on a circle, full flexions on all four legs, listening to his wind (he was and is a roarer, so he spent some time there, though I chose not to scope at that time based on his recommendation. He did an eye exam, checked teeth for age and condition looked for colic surgery scars, and did a rectal. We decided on what series of radiographs he felt would be beneficial (did not do knees and hocks based on the lameness exam and his past history, DID do his feet as he’s a QH and we wanted a look at those navicular bones as well as sole depth etc.)

Once the radiographs were done he spent a ton of time going over them with me-the whole process took at least an hour.

I’m not in NY but that seems a bit high for a basic PPE. Though based on reading these boards, it seems like there is a HUGE variation from clinic to clinic on this price.

I vetted my horse here in KY at one of the largest and biggest name hospitals in the area (Rood and Riddle). I paid $150 for the basic exam (health check, flexions, watched the horse go etc). I paid about $30/film for the xrays, so that brought my total up to around $800 with front feet, naviculars and hocks (stifles were done too, but free of charge).

I don’t know if GVEC will go to Newark - they would not go to Clifton Springs two years ago when I was horse shopping and Newark is a little further from their office in Scottsville. Ledgewood (Dr. Trachtenberg) vetted a horse at Finger Lakes for me (though the deal fell through) and that cost $300 for a very thorough physical exam, including a blood draw if a future drug screen was called for, but no radiographs.

I am nowhere near your location, but I have had more than a dozen PPE’s done in and around Aiken SC. The range is huge, low of $20 (that is not a typo) and high of $2,250 (I wish this one was a typo), but average has been around $1,200 with lower leg xrays and screening bloodwork. Low was in Thomson, GA and the high was in Camden, SC.

I would imagine the horse in question has long since been vetted, since the original post was well over a decade ago.

LOL I was reading through and didn’t notice the dates, thinking… $395 sounds very reasonable…borderline suspiciously cheap for east cost
