Cost of foal insurance?

Waiting to hear back from my insurance company, but thought I would see what other people’s experience was. I am looking at $8,000 worth of insurance on a week old Irish Draught colt.

Had a quote done on my filly for something like that. I think the number was $500 a year.

This is what my current agent came in at, major medical is $225 extra

2014 Irish Draught Colt (under the age of 31 days) vet certificate required

$8,000 Mortality @ 5.1% - $408.00 annual premium

$5,000 Emergency Colic Surgery – $1.00 annual premium

2014 Irish Draught Colt (31 days or older) no vet certificate needed

8,000 Mortality @ 3.2% - $256.00 annual premium

$5,000 Emergency Colic Surgery – $1.00 annual premium

The second one is pretty good, I might go for that! Can you PM who that is?

5% is normal. 3% after 31 days is better than I’ve seen. Several companies don’t drop the rate until 6 months - at which time they also let you sign up for major medical.

Mine was around $600 for mortality and $10,000 in major medical, starting at 31 days old. But she isn’t some fancy sporthorse, just an inexpensive little Morgan filly. The agent told me that the cost of her insurance will go down when she is a yearling, and stay down until she is started under saddle.
