I am thinking of moving my horse to a small self care barn, would need to pay for manure removal once a month for 2 horses, any ideas or ranges what that costs? (I am in South Florida area but any input is appreciated. Thanks!
Ask the owner, or whoever pays for it now. Prices are all over the place. We put most of our manure in the trash dumpster during the winter (6’x 3’ x 4’ about) with as much trash & manure as we can cram in. It costs us (California) $44 monthly for weekly pick up.
In the summer, which resembles Hell here, I dump mine in the dry lot and spread it with a drag.
I am in South Florida as well and I think it depends. My community provides manure pick up, but thats not common. Most people have a trailer and bring it to the dumpster.
You can rent a container which is picked up on a schedule, but I have no idea about the cost. But sure not cheap. Maybe you can ask at the barn how other people do it.
The cost will vary dramatically with where you live and what size containers are picked up, but you’re wise to be thinking about this!
I spend about $25 a horse per month for manure pickup at our 50-head stable in a 20 cu. yard rolloff bin that is emptied every 6 days. I have to buy the bin and replace it about every 4-5 years as the manure rusts through it, and the bins are about $4,000. So a considerable cost for our operation.
Some places won’t pick up manure at all, so go over the details to be sure there are no unexpected costs or service issues.
I bought a dump trailer for a similar situation, two horses and a burrito. A local septic guy lets me dump at his place for free because he makes his own soil.
OP, Call around to the local places that lease out dumpsters and see what their pricing options are.
^ this was my next option but decided the monthly cost was better spent on the trailer, and I could use it for more stuff

Oh, I agree with that. It sounds like your set up is great.
I was more talking to the OP. Sorry, I should have clarified.
I pay $210/mo for 12 rolling trash cans. I have 4 stalls, and use two of the cans for house garbage. Had a dumpster but the truck cracked my concrete driveway.
I advertise in the company paper “free clean horse manure, great for your gardern”. have people coming over all the time with their pickup trucks and taking it. but mostly in the spring or the fall.

What makes it “clean” horse manure (versus not clean horse manure)?
Free of shavings, straw, etc. after i worm i put that manure in a separate pile so as not to go into anyone’s garden.
Have you considered composting? I have a machine that can make compost from manure in 24 hours.
We are located in the mushroom growing capital of the country. With a lot of horses in the area also. I have always known this area comes with great benefits. Large selection of vets, service providers, hay and straw etc. Reading the various comments associated costs of dealing with muck out I appreciate our location even more, lol.
Dealing with our muck out only takes a phone call to one of a number of the mushroom growing companies. They come and pick it up (straw only) and pay us for it. Your farm has to have a minimum of X amount of horses. They want it fairly fresh and they want it to be enough to fill a very large truck.
They compost it for mushroom growing soil. It is only used for one growing cycle. So the “spent” compost soil has to be disposed of. It is an excellent soil amendment and they will bring it to one’s farm by the truck load for free to be spread on paddock, fields, etc. About as “green” as one can get and and win-win for everyone.
We pay $78 dollars a month for a dumpster (kind of a midsize one). We can put horse manure and household trash in it. Best option for us. It’s picked up once a week. The downside is I have to shovel everything into it so kind of a double workout for me. We have a gravel driveway so that isn’t a concern for us.
Manure mixed right in with the garbage?? Is there no compost and recycling?
