Disclaimer: I will almost certainly send him out anyway, but I want to assure DH I did ‘research’
What are ballpark figures for the cost per week or per month of sending a horse out for training these days? In this case from halter broke with some ground driving to ‘green but driving’. So from halter broke to green broke. It has been so long since I have done this sort of thing that any figures in my head are out of date…
Based in southern New England, trainer is a couple of towns over.
Not asking in the driving forum because I would like to get a wider range for the answering the question.
Anywhere from $1k-4k+ per month. Loads of variables.
I’m in NoVa and when pricing out training for my green bean it ran between 1300.00 - 4500.00.
NE Indiana $1K includes board/per month.
central florida - dressage trainer. $2600 per month board and training combined. This is a statistical sample of one, lol.
Probably not applicable, but you asked for a range
My mini cost me $125 + a 50# bag of oats.
Took him to a young Amishman as a 2-1/2yo, broke to lead & that was it.
He went in October, I was supposed to pick him up in December.
But weather turned nasty & trainer- who had no indoor - asked if he could keep him over the Winter.
In May I picked up a Daudi*-broke 3yo.
He’d been used to clear a field of trash, so **LOTS ** of Whoa & Stand.
Gave the family a $100 Aldi gift card & cash ($25 split among 3) to his kids who helped.
Amish kids don’t get cash for chores & they were thrilled.

Training board is $2600 per month at my hunter jumper barn about 1 hour from a major city. For comparison, full board is $1400.
I was paying $1600 per month full board and training for groundwork and backing, general riding education with obstacles, trails on the property, arena work.
My Arab just came back from 2 months of training where he was basically started/ restarted (I got him from the daughter of someone who had passed away from Covid and we were very unsure of his training level and what had been done with him). It was $1300/month, I had to provide my own feed.
Full training + board in the Northern suburbs of NYC is running $2500-$4500 / month for dressage-based and young-horse people, with the lower prices being farther out.
Central Maine
In the early fall of 2021 I paid $1500 for a month of board + training with a general horsemanship trainer. My mare was 9 and broke but had some holes.
Same trainer’s 2023 rates are $2400 a month.
The trainer I have picked out for my filly is currently charging $1400/mo, board and training. She isn’t going until probably spring 2024 so it may go up
Mine went to a young horse specialist at my current barn (actually, we liked it so much, my husband and I made it work to stay) for two months to primarily deal with some canter issues and just general dressage work to fill in the holes I couldn’t. I’m in MI and it cost $1400 a month
Training board at my barn about 45 mins south of Boston is $1200 for show horses that need regular schooling. They would probably tack more on to get one fully broke and going. We do H/J circuit (Fieldstone, etc.) but it’s not a barn that goes to Florida for the winter to put it in perspective.
Sent you a PM
Thanks all! That is the sort of range that I was suspecting, though I am hoping to be towards the lower end, if only so he can get more training…
Really appreciate the responses
