Just for kicks, what’s a spay (or neuter) cost out your way?
Just set up an app’t. for my Aussie pup’s spay, got a quote of $650 which is pretty good for this neck of the woods. But I can remember when it was about a hundred bucks.
Et vous?

Ouuuuuch.
Here they seem to be able to hold it under $200 for dogs and around $100 for spaying a cat, less for neuter. I think, seeing the other prices, that the vet hospitals around here basically do it at cost.
They also are quick to offer financial assistance through one of the local nonprofits for people with low incomes.
I don’t do them at the vet anymore as our local low cost spay/neuter is 40 for male and 60 for females. (cats) 5$ for pain meds if you want them. I believe the vet charges close to 200 for everything. They do just as well either place in my experience.
Cheapest regular vet cat neuter I found here in MN was ~$200.
Seemed pretty pricy to me. Was looking to fix some feral cats. There’s a state assistance program that will do it for less, but you have to prove low income.
Last time I spayed a dog (9 years ago or so?) I recall it being $500 ish bucks.
why are you spaying a puppy? read up on the negative consequences of spaying before full maturity.
$650 is utterly ridiculous for such a simple procedure.
Here it’s $175 for under 25 lbs, $200 for up to 50 lbs (dogs, spay). It’s roughly 200 give or take as an average at the 3 or 4 places I called.
You just can’t compare prices to prices. What is included in your price? At my clinic we do blood work prior to make sure liver/kidneys are good for anesthesia. We have had young dogs that had to wait because of questionable blood work results. We use a cardiac monitor. It will raise the price if client wants the surgery to be done by laser. We include an e-collar, pain meds, nail trim and suture removal.

$650 is utterly ridiculous for such a simple procedure.[/QUOTE] I wouldn’t call a spay simple whereas I would call a neuter (with both testicles dropped) simple.
We know prices vary region to region. Let’s compare prices AND what you get for that price. What does the low cost speuter place charge and for what? What does the specialty surgery place charge and for what?
I cringe when owners pinch pennies by skipping pain meds. Make that decision for yourself after you have surgery, not your speechless pet. The clinic that prices pain meds at $5 is doing a wonderful service for their patients!

Just because it is done frequently/routinely does not mean it is simple. It is major abdominal surgery. It is the toughest surgery most veterinarians do because of the vasculature.
Six years ago, I paid around $275 for a spay of a Cattle Dog pup. Three years ago, it was $180 for a neuter. Both were at my usual vet, and included the full blood workup before, monitoring for a day at the clinic, pain meds, and a checkup two weeks later.
My humane society does spay or neuter surgery up to 49 pounds $165.00, spay or neuter surgery 50 to 99 pounds $215.00, and pitbulls/pitbull mixes for $50. They do have income-based assistance as well. (The cats are dirt cheap, $85 for pets, $35 for ferals with a discount for multiples. ;))

I usually don’t do pain meds, but it has nothing to do with cost. I can’t explain to my dog or cat that he or she really shouldn’t be running/jumping/playing as usual. If they’re sore, they naturally limit movement. On a critter with a more sedate temperament I’m more likely to give pain medication after a surgery.
As for the OP’s question- a neuter around here at the regular vet costs ~$70- $125, a spay just a little more.
Holy crap! Lady Eboshi - where do you live? Those prices are ridiculous!
I had a semi-feral cat neutered for $10 at World Spay Day clinic (and sorry, did skip the pain meds because it would have been impossible to administer).
We have a decent, high-volume, low-cost veterinary practice that charges between $67.50 to $84 to spay a bitch, depending on weight. Cost to neuter a dog is between 52.50 and $60. It’s $8.50 for pain meds. Bloodwork etc would be additional. The vet who runs the practice does about 65-75 surgeries per week. Bless her heart.
This is one of my biggest pet peeves, so to speak.
I volunteer for an organization that does low cost spay and neuter. Pet owners must be low income or caring for feral cats to qualify. It is comparable to other low cost clinics in pricing, but it is totally different from a regular veterinary office. The landlord is providing greatly reduced rent. Most of the equipment has been donated rather than bought. Area veterinary clinics regularly donate supplies (the clinic isn’t a competitor because it is intended and does its best to only serve the population that needs s/n surgery but couldn’t get it without reduced prices). A lot of the staff are actually just very dedicated volunteers and are not being paid. The clinic hosts several fundraisers throughout the year. The prices can be so low because they are subsidized. If I were caring for feral cats, I would take them to the low cost clinic. When one of my personal pets requires a s/n, I go to my personal vet.
Personally, I think it is a horrible thing to even do the surgery in the absence of pain meds. If I had a hysterectomy, I can’t imagine not having pain meds.
My local clinic does offer options. You can opt for pre-surgery bloodwork, IV fluids throughout the procedure, and a laser. All of these things make it more expensive, but also probably easier on the animal. I consider a spay a pretty major surgery, but even for a neuter I am a sucker for my animals and I want it to be as easy on them as possible. Personally I don’t think 650 is a bad price if it includes some extras, and I live in the Midwest.

Southern Connecticut where people pretty much expect the same level of medical care for their critters as they have for themselves, prices reflecting likewise. I’m sure that price includes all the bells and whistles, possibly even an overnight stay though I’d like to avoid that if possible.
As to why I’m spaying her at 6 months, is that not the standard age most places, to do it before they go into estrus? She lives with 3 other dogs, two of which are neutered males, a zillion dogs are walked by here on the road, and a very large pack of coyotes come practically right up to the house! Therefore, I’d like to “manage matters before they arise” in the words of Sun Tzu. She’s getting close because she smells a little musky, like a fox!
I think my little dog was $300 ish about five years ago. Bloodwork , monitoring for the day,and pain meds included.
When she came home, she sat in her bed, put her paw on her incision and cried at me. Yeah, she got pain meds!
When I asked at our local Banfield a few years ago it was over $300 for a neuter. Then I found TCAP’s spay and neuter program and got Finn done for $65.
So if you are in Texas look up Texas Coalition for Animal Protection. They also do low cost vaccinations and heartworm testing.
I just had Scout-the-ExStray neutered two weeks ago at my regular vet. Their cost is $100 for dog neuters, plus $10 for pain meds. Bloodwork is optional.
I don’t know about dog spay costs, but for cats it’s $100 (plus $10 pain meds) for a spay and $75 for a neuter (plus $10 pain meds).
$250 for spay, $150 for neuter. Vet uses laser, keeps them overnight.
The Humane Society has a very low cost spay and neuter including vaccines that just started up this year. I’ve never used them (and won’t) because I’m not a fan of assembly line, cut 'em open and send them home surgeries. But for people who can afford nothing else, it’s fine.
Up until now, the strays and ferals I pick up go to my vet and he cuts me a break. Humane society also gives a $40 certificate towards spay/neuter and I use them for the non keepers.

This is a pretty outdated way of thinking, keeping them in pain so that they “know not to move/destroy the incision.”
Here are AAHA’s current pain management guidelines (if you search the PDF, you can find a section devoted to surgical pain).

Just got a Jack/Rat pup neutered at 8 months. He was $120 total at our normal vet. No pain meds, trying to keep his little butt quiet ended on day 2. UGH. I don’t believe he was in much pain, he didn’t bother the sutures in any way and was bouncing off walls like normal when not contained the very next morning.
As a side note- my 15 year old daughter came to me with a confused look and asked me if his “thingies” were going to fall off or just go away. When i said they would just go away, she gave me a relieved look. I asked why she was questioning that and she said because she wasn’t letting him sleep on her pillow until she found out. LMAO
