Cost to Import a Horse

What is the average cost to import a mare from Europe to California? The mare is over two years old. Is the average price around 9-10k? How is KLM for air transport? Thank you!!

We are doing Holland-New York for a gelding and it is about 4800 euros.

4800 euros… what does that include? Everything or is quarantine extra? What company?

I import to LAX several times a year.
4800 euros is normally just the shipping. KLM is the main aircarrier that flies into LAX from Europe. All the shippers have to use them.

You are looking at:
approx 5000 euros (roughly 7000 US) for the airfreight, fuel surcharges etc
definately 1950 dollars for the 3 day USDA quarantine
approximately 500-700 dollars trucking from LAX up to UC Davis for CEM quarantine
definately 1955 dollars for the UC Davis fees

Roughly 12K to import a mare to the West Coast.
Then you will have trucking from UC Davis to you.

KLM is excellent for transport; that’s who I’ve always used and I have also always used Triton for quarantine in L.A. Also have friends who use Triton in Newark and Miami. I have also flown as a groom for KLM when importing horses, which was very educational, exhausting, but also very fun!

I am not sure the company…we had a friend who imports all his horses help us, I will ask though. Although we live in Canada, we are doing it to NY as the quarantine is shorter and then the horse will be shipping to St.Louis and meet us at the horse show.

Over 2 years old has to do the CEM quarantine, which adds a bunch to your cost.

The prices mentioned above were about what I have spent importing mares to the west coast.

I have used Owen Jones owen@nebostud.com and Peter Jones pj@menaistud.com for importing. Both are very good and reasonably priced.

Jet pets in LA will be able to give you good info.

Try to make sure your horse starts the journey from somewhere close to the airport. Some horses coming from eastern Europe are being dragged 24 hours before they load on the plane and spend another 12+ h or so standing. Not ideal  While I agree with the 12K US range I would definitely get an on the spot quote from your preferred shipper (we use Guido Klatte based in Germany) to include the ground haul and paperwork expenses.
I’ve never had a client complain about Klatte’s services as they allow you to pay in a lump payment on the US end and accept credit card payment as well. Much more convenient than wiring portions here and portions there to Europe as the banks charge an arm and a leg for that ‘service’ LOL

I totally agree with Kareen, Klatte is very good and very competitive in addition.

Does anyone know what the cost of shipping a yearling from England to New York would be? Does a yearling have to go through quarantine? Final destination is St. Louis, MO.

I use Klatte also – he works with Tim Dutta on the US side (Dutta is based in NY) and you can either contact Dutta or Klatte for a quote / to arrange transport. They do an excellent job.

The west coast importers/brokers are different than the east coast. If you call Dutta about LAX they will tell you to call JetPets.

JetPets is Klatte’s LAX partner.
JetPets also works with other european partners.
As well in LAX you have Mersant and Triton but they use JetPet’s facility as it is the only one.

Also another item to watch is how much the markup is on the euros if you pay the whole thing on the USA side.
For instance i have worked with one out in LAX that charged a 20cents extra per euro for you paying the whole thing in dollars. So instead of 5000 euros for the airfreight at 1.40 which comes to 7000 dollars, they charged 1.60 euros which made it 8000 dollars! It was cheaper to me to wire the euros over separately and pay my bank $35 to do this rather than pay a $1000 dollar markup for the “convenience”. So be sure to ask them at what price are they converting the euros to dollars to make sure this is fair.

A final item to get worked out is how much to they charge you to pickup the horse at LAX and get it to JetPets USDA quarantine. JetPets is literally right across the fence from LAX. Less than 1/4 mile. But one broker listed me a $300 charge to truck the horse from LAX to the USDA quarantine facility (at JetPets)! I laughed at them and told them to take that off the bill or I wouldn’t use them for the import… Especially since there already is a separate fee for them to get the horse through the airport release process and processed in to the uSDA facility.

From another poster - ALL horses no matter what the age, MUST do the mandatory 3 day $1950 USDA quarantine. The extra mare and stallion quarantine only applies to horses over 24 months of age.

As to using Klatte or someone else - it depends on where in Europe the horse is coming from. From Germany - Klatte would be my first choice. But from Holland I prefer Langeweg - their prices are better and the trucking is cheaper within Holland.
