Cottonpickinwabbit - what I haven't told you

Criminy. Is he trying to get his name changed to CottonPACKINwabbit?

Glad he came through ok. He’s a lucky guy.

Wow ACME that’s some wound and his will to live is amazing. He’s so very very luck to have ended up with you!

BUT, what will he do next?

Jingles for you.

Do you have a really experienced, well-traveled high-mileage older horse you could put with him? To satisfy his yen for adventure with the older horse’s many stories about his glory moments of great jumps, deep waters, exquisite dressage and other side adventures Mom knows nothing about. Or maybe Wabbit would just copy his good sense.

The one and only horse my own horse ever really seemed to care about was an old eventer who had been there, done that. Watching them together I really got the feeling the old guy was sagely recounting war stories while the young guy (my horse) was wide-eyed and impressed, saying “Really ??? And then you … ??? Were you scared ???” (Not counting all the mares he’s been sweet on, gelding though he is … )

Boo, Wabbit, stop it!!!

Followed your last thread, and now this one. You have my sympathy. My TB tried to kill himself regularly until he was 5 or 6. Just looked up your guys age, and was not surprised. The good news is, they seem to grow out of it.
Jet did all sorts of things to himself. The worst was a head/neck injury so he couldn’t lift his head up off the ground for about a week. I had to go out there every 2 hrs and hold his head up for 20 min so the fluids would drain, because it caused his head to swell up the same size as his base of his neck, and he was having problems breathing.

Hopefully your guy will stop trying to kill himself soon. Jet is 16 now, and not suicidal anymore, so there should be light at the end of the tunnel for you!

That sounds horrible!

Cotton is actually doing (knock on wood) great right now. There is still a strip of meaty tissue that has to finish closing, but no appreciable hole. I rode him on his first solo hack all the way to my friend’s barn and back and he was digging it. He is still, of course, green as can be but the fact that he can be trusted so much is really a testament to how confident and rational he is.

Thanks for all the well wishes! Next week I’ll start some trot poles and he’ll go on his first field trip when the Carolina Horse Park has their schooling day in July. So, anyone that wants to say hi to him is more than welcome!

Pictures and video are, obviously, a must.

He’s a keeper, that’s for sure

Healing Jingles for you both!

Cotton reminds me of a friend’s mare, of whom her vet said:
“She’s making me treat things I only saw in vet school textbooks”

Eek! That is never good when a vet says that! lol

P.

Holy shit that horse has done some serious damage to himself. His powers of recovery are nothing short of amazing though. I hope he’s done trying to kill himself now. I know you are too! Yes, I think he definitely needs a steady eddie buddy. Perhaps his own donkey to say, “Whoa there son! I wouldn’t do THAT!!!”

I think “big” sells pretty easily these days. “Small” is a much harder problem in a resale, so personally that wouldn’t put me off, just the pasterns. However, biig plus those pasterns = asking for trouble as the big guys are tough on themselves.
