Cough but no nasal discharge or other symptoms

So over the weekend (after brutally cold, below zero temps) my horse coughed a few times. I took note of it but my trainer said it was probably just from the cold. But he still has a cough. I texted my vet and she’s thinking it’s allergies to dust in the hay. But she has not seen him yet. She recommended wetting the hay and trying a product called Cough Ease.

He has been feeling spunky. No nasal discharge. No fever so far. But when he coughs occasionally he has spit out little bits of hay or something. And he does sometimes kind of mess around with his mouth after.

I’m looking for any other ideas. I’m almost suspicious that he has something kind of stuck in his throat? Not choke but something irritating? I think I read something on cough about someone finding a little stick in their horses throat.

Other ideas I’m thinking about is to try some Zyrtec. Otherwise if it doesn’t improve very soon I think I’m going to ask if my vet will come out.

It happens at rest and in work.

This is my first time dealing with any sort of cough. I almost wish it was clearly just a little virus. But so far, not clear what this is about.

Today is Monday - which weekend did this start?

I’ve found that non specific coughs hang around for about a week and then get better over the next 4-5 days. Just long enough to make me call the vet and then be pretty much resolved by the time of the appointment.

I noticed it the last Friday. So at least 4 days. I hope your timeline is right and that as soon as I’m getting ready to pick up the phone to make the vet come, it resolves!

MY OTTB gelding started a cough when we were warming up and it was a big, whole-body cough for a few times and then it stopped. No nasal discharge either. It persisted so I took him to the vet, we did a little bloodwork, we bagged him, he was fine. My vet said we could scope him if I wanted, and we had time so I did. Found out that he’d had tie-back surgery at some point and he was likely aspirating bits of grass or hay left in his mouth. He’s normally out, so my vet suggested rinsing his mouth out well before bridling him and that has helped. What’s funny is when I got him a year ago, I noticed that he seemed to love to wash his mouth out when he eats, after we ride and anytime I have the hose on. He still does, so it’s not a big deal to do it. He actually loves it!

Horse at my barn just started a cough too. Otherwise she’s totally fine. We are not too worried yet, I also considered that it possibly weather related… I know for myself things in my body just melt or something when the season changes and I dont feel well. Or maybe its because everything else is melting so the environment is releasing allergens and such.

Interesting! My guy is young ( QH) and I highly doubt he had any tie back surgery yet but it’s good to keep in mind. Thank you.

I’ve been hearing this from many people all in different parts of the country. So I do wonder if it’s just allergies.

I started him on Zyrtec two days ago and of course I have no idea if it’s taken effect but he did barely cough today when ridden. Much improved. So I’m hopeful!

I have an asthma/heaves horse and very sensitive. No problems normally in the winter but I opened a bale of hay the other day and she coughed. And noticed she coughed the next day. Pulled all that hay
out of my feeders and the remaining couple bales from that section and put in the compost.

Cough stopped.

If you haven’t had a problem in the past my first thought would be dust or an unseen mold. My hay smells great and has no mold whatsoever but I did notice that bale had just the ever slightest bit of a dust to it.

Just a thought.

I don’t wet my hay but have during episodes last summer that that I now believe were really triggered by organic matter getting under mats and other places and getting wet and molding. Tiny spots - not obvious. I’m all over that this year and fingers crossed will have no issues.

My mare had a cough late last summer during a humid, but dry (no rain) spell. Exercise made it worse, but she would also cough occasionally when not working. Vet was out on the 4th day and said it wasn’t an infection, normal lung sounds, so keep an eye on it. After reading through some posts here, I started giving her generic Zyrtec and it cleared up about a week later. A few other horses had the same thing. They all resolved in ~9-14 days max. About a month ago, a fellow boarder’s horse started the same thing. Her vet said he’d prescribe antibiotics if it didn’t resolve on it’s own in a week. She did the ABx, but I think that was unnecessary since he didn’t have a fever or yellow discharge, etc. and exhibited exact symptoms as the horses in summer. He is also a horse kept stalled most of the time, so definitely think it was related to either mold or dust, not bacteria.

Yes first time I’ve noticed a cough, although I’ve only owned him a year. I did wonder about the hay. It seems and looks great but is a tad finer and dustier.

Thankfully he lives outside but in an outdoor shed row. I would imagine shavings would make it worse.

He’s doing better now so fingers crossed that he continues to improve quickly!
