So sorry to hear this. What a nice picture!
Jingles from CO!
I drive and I always tell people that driving a carriage is more dangerous than riding. It doesn’t help when asshat car drivers are part of the equation. Serious jingles for the BO. It is harder to recover from horse injuries as you age. I’m glad the pony is okay, at least physically. I suspect that she could drive again, but have to be restarted.
I can only hope that the police cited the car driver and insurance information has been provided to the injured parties. There will be a heck of a claim for this accident. Please keep us updated.
Sending my jingles as well!!!
Quick update
BO is home. Went from ICU to home - they needed the bed :(. PSA to anyone passing through Fort Wayne, IN, avoid Parkview Hospital.
I guess it was funny on Friday noon, as one of the old biddies in the area was telling Mom everything that so & so saw on the accident report. After listening to her spiel, Mom pointed out that she had requested the report on Thursday as the pony owner, but was unable to get a copy, BECAUSE IT HADN’T BEEN FINISHED YET. The officers wouldn’t be back at work until 1pm on Friday (an hour after the conversation) to finish it.
You people who think your barn has gossip & drama, don’t have anything on this place. Gossip is an Olympic level team sport in this town/barn.
Jingles from AZ.
So sorry to hear this. Jingles coming from Idaho!

Any News? How’s BO doing?
Was the buggy that he was driving the one in the photo?
Still Jingling…

Thanks so much.
Mom saw the pony, she looks ok. Vet is coming out anyway. Mom realized she needs the police report, since it was her pony & the driver will be responsible for the bill.
Sounds like the running gear separated from the top of the buggy, so the pony was relatively unaffected, i.e. no flopping, broken shafts, and stopped just around the corner. So hopefully she isn’t completely ruined.
Mom & Dad were in the area, but turned off the main road a couple turns before the wreck & missed the traffic jam - apparently it took 4 hours to clear, as the county cops were assumed it would be a homicide. She got home to friends calling, it was on the 6 pm news. The guy’s wife was shopping at Wal-Mart & didn’t find out for 2 hours.
BO is 79, even if he recovers well, it’s still going to affect him a lot. They were doing another MRI this morning.
The old man was barely a mile from home, turning off the main road. The driver apparently was going to pass him, but swerved back into him to avoid oncoming traffic.
No one knows if charges are going to be filed. I hope they are. Reckless driving at the minimum, I’d prefer attempted vehicular manslaughter. Maybe the county will wise up and change the blinking yellow light at the intersection to a stop sign or full signal.
Here’s the two of them on a better day. I still have a hard time believing this happened.[/QUOTE]
What an awesome looking pair! Sending prayers for a quick and complete recovery to BO, and pony.
More jingles!

I agree, the worst horse wrecks I have seen were with driving horses.
There is just so much more to driving than one horse/rider.
When you add a contraption attached to the horse, there is just more to go wrong.
I hope he is recovering well at home.
Still jingling. How is everyone doing, OP?
I’m so sorry. I can’t imagine a 79 year old body dealing with this!
The Energizer Bunny has slowed down, but he’s still going.
The staples came out the other day. I was glad to hear that; originally he wasn’t going back to the doc until May 1. I had stitches in for 16 days & screamed a bit when they came out; I could only imagine staples coming out after 3 weeks. That would have been awful.
Family is dealing with it. I think he & his wife are back in their house; they spent a couple days with their daughter. Their son lives basically next door, so that helps a lot. Son’s boys have been doing the barn work.
It doesn’t sound like charges have been filed against anyone yet. Apparently there is some question as to whether the guy at the scene was actually driving. Something about leaving the scene & returning 30 min later. Reminds me of my first car wreck when the drunk driver who hit me walked off but couldn’t be cited for hit & run since their car was there.
My mare is at another barn until the end of the month being bred. I’m seriously considering asking someone else what turning her out in his field would cost. Feels like I’m jumping ship, but I’m not sure how long he’s really going to be able to keep boarding horses. At least none of his mares have been bred for next year, they are just starting to foal now. I think there’s 2 more coming; 2 colts are already on the ground.
Not much yet on restarting the pony. Go to for this would usually be the old guy, but that’s not going to happen, obviously. My dear sweet father (sarcasm) was questioning why Mom doesn’t just do it since she’s such a horseman. Why? Because she’s 70! She doesn’t need to take that risk. (no back story there - (more sarcasm)).
And on a different note, (86 yro) Dad is madly in love with the 3yro stud colt they were out looking at when the wreck happened. As in he was a little bit disappointed that Mom finally called in a day later (she’s visiting my sister 1000 miles away) so he can’t use an insurance check from a plane crash to buy himself this could-be/would-be harness horse to put in training. Everyone who wishes their parents were more into horses need to be careful what they wish for.
